On July 1, EU citizens who haven’t applied for status will lose their rights. No one should become unlawful on 1 July. This goes against the promise made in 2016. Innocent people will have the rug pulled from under their feet.
We have warned the Government since 2016 about the risk of making people unlawful overnight. It’s now happening in a week’s time on a big scale. As an example, 1 in 6 EU citizens receiving pensions and benefits have not applied yet. thetimes.co.uk/article/130-00…
While applying for status has been straightforward for many, there are barriers for vulnerable people and children, as highlighted by the @MigObs. The Home Office knows that innocent people will become unlawful residents on 1 July. migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/resources/repo…
The Govt has responded with a confusing new policy called the 28-day rule, only relevant for a small number of people who get a notice from @ukhomeoffice. It changes little to nothing about the loss of rights faced by people who will become unlawful residents in the UK on 1 July.
A lot of people will lose out, such as children and older people. It is the Government’s responsibility to ensure that no one is made unlawful in the country we call home. /END
