On June 24, 2009, Virat Kohli played a forgotten gem that few outside Kolkata remember.
He was playing for Mohun Bagan in the P Sen Trophy final.
Mohun Bagan also had Wriddhiman Saha and Manish Pandey.
The opposition, Town Club, had Saurabh Tiwary and Ishank Jaggi.
+
They also had a Shami Ahmed, a fast bowler from Uttar Pradesh.
We now know him as Mohammed Shami.
Town Club got Pandey with the second ball of the match.
Remember, Pandey was a big name at this point. Not too long ago he had become the first Indian to score an IPL hundred.
+
Kohli walked out. Saha, yet to play for India, stayed put.
And on a hot June day, Kohli lit up Eden Gardens.
When Saha fell for 44, Mohun Bagan were 159 in 20.5 overs.
Kohli continued to plunder runs.
He eventually left, not because he got out but because he was dehydrated.
+
But he returned.
He eventually got a 121-ball 184 with 20 fours, 8 sixes.
He was caught by Tiwary off Suvojit Chakraborty.
He fell 23 short of MS Dhoni’s record of 207 in Kolkata club cricket, for Shyambazar Club against George Telegraph in 2005.
Mohun Bagan won by 97 runs.
+
Somsuvra Laha's observation in the Hindustan Times is worth a mention.
Laha wrote that Kohli "wasn’t very exuberant about his knock. Instead he preferred sitting quietly at one corner checking out his blade even as his team rejoiced on the sidelines.
+
"Kohli is one of those players who is not impressed with himself easily."
I don't think this attitude has changed over time.
