Many of you have asked about the science behind my free new personality assessment, PrinciplesYou. I need to take a scientific-evidence based approach to my decision making and I need to work with the most knowledgeable people in the areas I’m interested in... (1/8)
... who also take a scientific approach. That’s why I worked with @AdamMGrant, Brian Little and John Golden - three great psychometricians - to follow that approach in the creation of PrinciplesYou. I want you to understand what we, led by them, did. (2/8)
They started with the Big Five personality assessment database as a foundation as it is an extensively researched and respected perspective within the personality and organizational research world. (3/8)
They augmented this framework in several ways to have PrinciplesYou get at what other personality instruments were missing based on the research that they carried out. (4/8)
They also utilized well established advanced psychometric techniques, including novel algorithms for creating profiles and Archetypes. Third, PrinciplesYou is unique in measuring traits that I’ve identified over my decades of running Bridgewater... (5/8)
... and its results were then triangulated with test results derived from prior personality tests and actual data results about what people are like (e.g. from performance reviews, self-assessments, etc.). (6/8)
When those who have taken PrinciplesYou expressed how well and completely the results describe them, the ratings were very high and higher than the other tests used. You can judge it for yourself and ask your friends to assess how well it describes you... (7/8)
... and you can do the same for them.

For example, bringing one’s finances to the point that one’s spending is greater than one’s earnings and one’s assets are greater than one’s liabilities can only be reversed by either working harder or consuming less, which is not easily done. (1/4)
Still, this cycle needn’t transpire this way if those in their rich and powerful stages stay productive and safe by continuing to work hard and smart, earn more than they spend, save a lot, and make the system work well for most of the population. (2/4)
A number of empires and dynasties have sustained themselves for hundreds of years and the United States, at 244 years old, has proven itself to be one of the most durable now in existence. (3/4)

You will have to get over your reluctance to assess what people are like if you want to surround yourself with people who have the qualities you need. That goes for yourself too. People almost always find it difficult to identify & accept their own mistakes and weaknesses. (1/4)
Sometimes it's because they're blind to them, but more often it's because their egos get in the way. Most likely your associates are equally reluctant to point out your mistakes, because they don't want to hurt you. You all need to get over this. (2/4)
More than anything else, what differentiates people who live up to their potential from those who don't is their willingness to look at themselves and others objectively and understand the root causes standing in their way. (3/4)

Some ways of thinking will serve you well for some purposes and serve you poorly for others. It is highly desirable to understand one’s own and others’ ways of thinking and their best applications. Some qualities are more suitable for some jobs. (1/4) Image
For example, you might not want to hire a highly introverted person as a salesman. That’s not to say an introvert can’t do that job; it’s just that a gregarious person is likely to be more satisfied in the role and do a better job. (2/4)
If you're not naturally good at one type of thinking, it doesn't mean you're precluded from paths that require it. It does, however, require that you either work with someone who has that required way of thinking (which works best) or... (3/4)

If they choose to have a primarily win-win cooperative-competitive relationship, they must take into consideration what is really important to the other and try to give it to them in exchange for them reciprocating. (1/5)
In that type of win-win relationship, they can have tough negotiations done with respect and consideration, competing like two friendly merchants at a bazaar or two friendly teams at the Olympics. (2/5)
If they choose to have a lose-lose mutually threatening relationship they will primarily think about how they can hurt the other in the hope of forcing the other into a position of fear in order to get what they want. (3/5)

Because of the biases with which we are wired, our self-assessments (and our assessments of others) tend to be highly inaccurate. Psychometric assessments are much more reliable.
They are important in helping explore how people think during the hiring process and throughout employment.
Though psychometric assessments cannot fully replace speaking with people and looking at their backgrounds and histories, they are far more powerful than traditional interviewing and screening methods.

You’re going to want to know what you’re like, right? And, you’re going to want to know what the people around you are like, right? By knowing what you’re like, you’re going to know what to do with yourself to get what you want.
And by knowing what the people around you are like, you’ll know what to expect of them, and how to interact with them in the best possible way.
Knowing how you think and how others you interact with think is critical in getting what you want in both your personal life and in work.
