What started as an exploration to better understand physical activity constraints in patients with treated hypothyroidism, has culminated in valuable data and novel factors that are associated with long-term exercise intolerance in this specific group. 1/
Our latest study showed that moderate-intensity physical activity was lower in patients compared to the general population. 2/
Besides, two-thirds of the patients reported that hypothyroidism was limiting their physical activity performance due to exercise-related constraints. 3/
These limitations were more pronounced in patients with autoimmune thyroiditis than in patients with hypothyroidism from other etiology, representing disease-specific exercise intolerance. 4/
The perceived limitations could indicate that this patient group may experience additional barriers to perform regular physical activity, which can jeopardize recommended physical activity levels for health. 5/
This research is of importance as so little is known about the nature and extent of exercise intolerance among patients with treated hypothyroidism. 6/
Moreover, we hope that this paper will contribute to the promotion of regular exercise in treated hypothyroid patients, so that this group can also benefit from the positive health aspects of a sporty lifestyle. 7/
