A woman stopped by yesterday campaigning for city council on the platform of “how dare they build a drug treatment center so close to an elementary school.” Her husband is the lawyer that the neighborhood GoFundMe is paying to fight this. “I support the center actually” I said...
And I heard the response I always hear. “Oh me too of course! Just not near a SCHOOL.” The fear this campaign has spread about what will happen to our children if we let [insert dehumanizing words for folks in recovery] live near us has been next level.
The reality is, to put it where there are no schools would be to take it out of town. So by saying “not near schools” they’re saying “not near us at all.” As soon as the city passed the permit, there was talk of gating our community. I couldn’t help thinking of something I read..
“This is what we should fear: what our own desperate desire for safety might end up doing to those who are beloved in the eyes of God, whom we so carelessly call snakes and sharks.” The Myth of the American Dream” - @d_l_mayfield
There have been several articles written about this, but here’s a recent one. columbian.com/news/2021/jun/…
