As we gear up for our fifth teach-in, โ€œThe Concept of Intersectionality, Combatting Multiple Systems of Oppression in Caribbean Movements and the Grenada Revolution,โ€ weโ€™re sharing a quote from one of the readings by our facilitator, @AmilcarSanatan!! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿพ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿงต Headshot of Amรญlcar Sanatan, a black man, with long locs that cascade past and behind his shoulders. He is wearing a dark blue-black suit jacket with a crisp, white shirt. His facial expression is relaxed and neutral, matching the neutral tone of the backdrop โ€” a solid grey.

Weโ€™ll be discussing 20th century approaches to combatting systems of oppression, the emergence of 'intersectionality' in theory, and practical considerations for movement-building regarding gender justice today. Here are some excerpts from Joanne C. Hillhouseโ€™s (@jhohadliโ€™s) latest piece from her residency with us! โœ๐Ÿฝ ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฌ ๐Ÿงต

bit.ly/4c99VLRA vibrant cover image for an essay titled "Caribbean Celluloid: Telling our Stories on Film" by Joanne C. Hillhouse. The background is a soft purple with large pink and white flowers framing the image. In the foreground, Joanne wears short natural hair, and a bright red-orange dress with cutout shoulders and vibrant earrings, is smiling while holding a copy of her book, โ€œLost! A Caribbean Sea Adventure.โ€
Her reflection on Kingsley Ben-Adirโ€™s performance as the eponymous character in ๐๐จ๐› ๐Œ๐š๐ซ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฒ: ๐Ž๐ง๐ž ๐‹๐จ๐ฏ๐ž, is a thoughtful paean: The background is purple with colorful flowers and leaves framing the image, alongside a partially visible open book and a section of a book titled "The Boy from Willow Bendโ€ : โ€œIt matters that he understood that Caribbean languages are languages with a history and a system, and, like any language, evolved the vocabulary they need to say what they need to say and that there are nuances and context and layers to that.โ€
This is an important addition to Hillhouseโ€™s reflection on the care taken to express what Kamau Brathwaite terms, โ€œnation language.โ€ As Hillhouse asserts in the previous slide, it is rich and coherent โ€” with a history and a system. Paralanguage is no exception: Authenticity of performance in Bob Marley: One Love: โ€œAs a born and raised Caribbean woman, I was particularly delighted by some of the non-verbals from both of them but Lashana especially. A natural eeeeh, e-heh, hmmm, choops, noise in the back of the throat, cut eye, or lip movement communicates specific things to those who understand the code.โ€ The background is purple with prominent pink and white flowers and green leaves surrounding the text.
