Kashmiri Sikh girl episode is disturbing in many ways
One gets pain of Kashmiri Sikhs. They're a tiny minority & get targeted by vested interests - state agencies, Muslim & Hindu extremists
They deserve respect for not getting weaponised against Muslims, despite pressures. 1/n
Given this context, it's not surprising that this case led to so much toxicity.
Was her marriage to a Muslim forced? Her family's version indicates it was
Should she have been married off soon after her return? No. And this decision raises more questions than it answers.
2/n
Role of police has been deeply questionable. First, allegedly acting against girl's family and then changing stance. Fact that police reports to Centre makes more suspicious.
We won't know the truth until the girl's unpressured version comes out which it may never.
3/n
The girl's agency has been biggest casualty in the episode. May God help her.
Small mercy is that Sikhs & Muslims stepped back from what could have been a big communal confrontation.
On ground there was support for Sikhs from local Muslims, particularly religious leaders.
4/n
Online was more toxic but at least there was some willingness to dialogue and not give in to Hindutva propaganda.
In the end, one realises that solidarity doesn't depend on reciprocation or common interests but what one feels is right or just.
