Thread: A very stressful June for a few US spec ops vets & me. Our dear brother, an Afghan special immigrant visa applicant—who hasn’t heard from the US emb despite 12 years fighting alongside US commandos—was trapped in a tiny base surrounded by Taliban texting him death threats
We heard from him around the clock for weeks as Taliban closed in, seizing Afghan govt checkpoints near his tiny outpost—many surrendering without a shot fired—surrounding his base where he was a contractor directing security for civil infrastructure
The alarming fragility of the Afghan government’s armed forces, which the United States and NATO allies spent two decades forming, forging and arming was acute to our friend, who was not an interpreter but an operator who worked with Green Berets and a tier 1 national asset
Our Afghan Commando friend has been shot multiple times by Taliban, al Qaeda and ISIS while operating side-by-side with American special operators. He has been subjected to extensive background checks, vetting and is endorsed by a who’s who of US commanders
Taliban know our brother’s identity and that he targeted their leadership with US forces for years as an operator. He should have been at the front of the line of those 18,000 Afghans seeking special immigrant visas—but he’s heard NOTHING in a year from the US Govt he served
If getting shot multiple times fighting with our most elite US military forces, not to mention our friend’s other substantial credentials and endorsements in writing from a bevy of US Commanders, units and top commands isn’t enough to prove loyalty to America — what the hell is?
We know this Afghan as a man who laughs off his gunshot wounds and smiles at death. But, armed with only an AK-47 as a contractor at a tiny base protecting civil infrastructure—as his Taliban pursuers use pilfered NVGs, lasers & looted weapons systems—our bro expressed real fear
Finally last week, our buddy finally was flown out of his tiny base by helicopter—extraction by vehicle impossible—by his former Afghan Commando comrades and made it to their base and safety. Now we wonder, will he be in the group of SIV hopefuls airlifted out by State to Guam?
While my Afghan Commando-turned-contractor watched Taliban close in (the least dangerous days of his career until Afghanistan began to fall further apart amid the US military’s withdrawal and the Taliban on the march), his American boss told him no evacuation was going to happen
The way my friend was treated as an “expendable” at his little tiny base, a man who applied for and unquestionably deserves a special immigrant visa immediately to get out of Afghanistan to the US, is much worse than I’m revealing now. When he is safe, we will tell his full story
In this photo of American special operators flying into harm’s way is our Afghan Commando friend awaiting his SIV—or even a call from the U.S. Embassy—who never wavered in his commitment to eliminating terrorist commanders and threats alongside his brothers-in-arms from the U.S.

My first story about US Capitol security was published for UPI 23 years ago. I interviewed lawmakers five months before gunman Russell Weston’s July 24, 1998 crazed attack which left 2 USCP officers dead. The issue was how to secure Congress and maintain public accessibility. 1/9
"The barricades give some amount of protection, but there's little protection against a determined terrorist," the late Rep. Ike Skelton (D-MO) told me in February 1998. (I’d known Ike since childhood.) "Americans should be able to visit their capital, and do it safely." 2/9
"The tragedy is that America's capital is subject to such threats," Ike continued in the interview 23 years ago. He was to become Armed Services Committee chairman before his 2013 death. "But we're blessed with excellent Capitol Police. I don't think you can do any better." 3/9

Hostages freed are good for @realDonaldTrump who has made the issue a hallmark of his administration and highlighted it with several former hostages appearing at his convention, along with Kayla Mueller’s parents. This case has unfolded fast since Monday.

After the death in ISIS captivity of Kayla Mueller, her parents Carl and Marsha and Rev. @kmdday advised me to speak to two women in Turkey who were friends of Kayla’s and tried in vain to get the attention of US officials after she was kidnapped in 2013.

When I called young American journalist Halla Barakat and her Syrian activist mom Dr. Orouba in 2015, I was stunned to learn they made repeated calls to US diplomats in Turkey and no one gave them the time of day, even though they had the most knowledge about Kayla’s kidnapping.
At FBI request, the Muellers recorded calls about Kayla. In their first call with Halla Barakat in 2015, she told them Syrians “hurt” when they don’t know how a loved one has died. “Kayla's one of these people. Her truth, I think just unfortunately died with her." Haunting words.

BREAKING @ABC — Alexanda Kotey and El Shafee Elsheikh are in the air at this hour on their way to Washington to be charged as ISIS guards of 4 murdered US hostages, US official tells me. The “Beatles” are expected to appear in federal court in Alexandria, Va. this afternoon.
It cannot be overstated what an emotional moment this is for families of ISIS hostages murdered in captivity that these two Londoners are finally coming to the US District Court in the Eastern District of Virginia. They will have the last word. They also still want information.
I came off a mountain hike in Colorado Aug 19, 2014 and saw ghastly ISIS video slaughter of Jim Foley. I’d known that a full squadron of 1SFOD-D (Delta Force) tried to rescue the hostages July 4 near Raqqa but found a “dry hole” so I held off reporting it.

BREAKING @ABCInvestigates — Intelligence reports warned of #coronavirus crisis as early as November: Sources

abcnews.go.com/Politics/intel…

Story by @joshmargolin & @meekwire
From that warning in November by DIA’s National Center for Medical Intelligence, sources described repeated briefings through December for policy-makers and decision-makers as well as the National Security Council at the White House.

abcnews.go.com/Politics/intel…
All of that culminated with a detailed explanation of the problem that appeared in the President’s Daily Brief of intelligence matters in early January. For something to have been in the PDB, it would have had to go through weeks of vetting and analysis.
