Facebook just became the fastest business to hit a $1 trillion valuation.

17 years and 3 billion users later...

Here are 9 memorable moments 🧵
The Winklevii

In 2003, Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss pitch Zuck on a Harvard social network called ConnectU.

50 emails later, they didn't realize Zuck was secretly working on a different project.

Mark registers TheFacebook..com on January 11, 2004
In 2006, everyone told Zuckerberg to sell.

Yahoo was offering $1B.

He was 22 and stood to make $300M.

Despite the pressure, he refused and raised at a $15 billion valuation the next year.

Zuck was right.
In September 2006, Facebook releases the News Feed.

It officially put the social in social network.
Hiring Sheryl

"I never hire someone unless I'd work for them in an alternate universe."
-Zuckerberg

Zuck hires Sheryl Sandberg as the Chief Operating Officer in March 2008.

Pre-hire revenue: -$56 million
Today: $28 billion
The 2008 financial crisis hurt Facebook.

So Zuck started 2009 with a New Years resolution:

Wear a tie to work every single day for 12 months.

Symbolizing a serious year for Facebook.

He didn't miss a day.
The Social Network

The 2010 movie that took Zuck and Facebook mainstream.

Zuckerberg feared the movie would make him look bad.

Spoiler Alert: It does

But he didn't hide.

He bought out the Shoreline cinema and bussed over all the employees to watch the premier.
In 2012, Facebook hit 1 Billion users.

How?

Avoid seeking virality.

Focus on solving 3 problems:

• How to get people on the front door?
• How to get them to an “Aha” moment ASAP?
• How to deliver core product value as often as possible?

Zuck paid $1 billion in 2012.

Today, Instagram would be worth about $153 billion.
"Get Together?"

Zuck's cold email to WhatsApp founder Jan Koum.

In 2013, WhatsApp was adding 1 million new users PER DAY.

In 2014, Facebook bought WhatsApp for $19.3 billion.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings thought this startup would fail.

But Roku turned from an afterthought into a $45 billion business.

Here's an epic story👇
In 2007, Roku CEO Anthony Wood cold calls Reed Hastings.

Here's how it MAY have went down😉:

Wood: "Hey Reed I want to build the best TV streaming box for Netflix that the world's ever seen."

Hastings: "How did you get my number?"
Wood: "I knew the area code and then guessed all 47,569 potential combos. It took me 146 hours.

Can I take you to lunch to talk more?"

*30 seconds of phone silence later*

Hastings: "Well, you're pretty persistent. Let's do it."

I studied the best 10 investors the world’s ever seen.

Here's what you need to know:
Price is a liar.

"Market prices are always wrong because they just show a biased view of the future."

Enter a meeting with a founder with a zen-like blank slate of perfect humility.

Bezos and Gates invested in his startup.

Today, it's a $3.3 billion business.

Here's what I learned from interviewing Dan Lewis👇
You're not the CEO.

You're the CSO.

Chief Storytelling Officer.
What to ask potential customers:

1) What goes wrong most often?

2) What's your least favorite thing?

3) What do you wish would be better?

"Career planning is for losers."
- Marc Andreesen (probably)

I read 10,000 words of career advice from @pmarca.

Here are 10 lessons👇
Rule 1: Don't plan your career.

The world is changing too fast.

Impossible to plan when you can't predict the future.

Career planning = Career limiting
Treat your career as an investment portfolio.

Need both safe and risky investments with different returns (or benefits).

Risky = 5 person startup

Safe = Facebook as the millionth employee

Different investments are better for different times.
