Let's use July 1st in 🇨🇦 to address the systems that we are part of that continue to do harm to indigenous peoples. There are concrete opportunities to do better. #TruthAndReconciliation shows us clear steps. For those other HCWs, here are the 7️⃣ steps for health.
A 🧵
1️⃣Recognize The current state of Aboriginal health is a direct result of previous Canadian government policies, including residential schools. Recognize and implement the health-care rights of Aboriginal people
2️⃣Government w/ Aboriginal peoples, establish goals to close gaps in health outcomes between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities (e.g. infant mortality, maternal health, suicide, mental health, addictions, life expectancy, birth rates, infant and child health issues, etc.)
3️⃣Recognize, respect, and address the distinct health needs of the Métis, Inuit, and off-reserve Aboriginal peoples.
4️⃣Provide sustainable funding for Aboriginal healing centres to address the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual harms caused by residential schools, and to ensure that the funding of healing centres in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories is a priority.
5️⃣Recognize the value of Aboriginal healing practices and use them in the treatment of Aboriginal patients in collaboration with Aboriginal healers and Elders where requested by Aboriginal patients.
6️⃣
i) Increase the number of Aboriginal professionals working in the health-care field.
ii) Ensure the retention of Aboriginal health-care providers in Aboriginal communities.
iii) Provide cultural competency training for all healthcare professionals.
7️⃣ Medical & nursing schools should require all students to take a course on Aboriginal health issues, including history/legacy of residential schools, rights, treaties, Indigenous teachings/practices. Learn intercultural competency, conflict resolution, human rights, anti-racism
I have edited to fit each recommendation into a tweet but have tried to ensure I capture all the points. This is *just* health. We have many more responsibilities. As HCWs we can start working here.
