Why are nearly 1m children & young people classed as persistent absentees? Sadly, the data doesn’t tell us, which is why the approaches to behaviour & absence (which have been in place for years) are not working. We applaud the MIND report which calls for "an attendance 1/2
2/2 system which does not disadvantage or stigmatise young people experiencing mental health problems" and trauma-informed teaching for all staff. These CYP are not 'skipping school' or 'not showing up' #notozerotolerance #notfineinschool
In 2018/19, 43% of persistent absences had no formally recorded reason (absence codes O, C or N). That means WE DO NOT KNOW WHY they were absent. Assumptions that claim they are 'skipping school' or on a path to prison are inaccurate #notfineinschool #notozerotolerance
