Owen promoting McDonnell as a caretaker Labour leader reminds us what a great electoral strategist he is, giving me a flashback to 2019, before Boris crushed Corbyn and won the Tories their biggest majority in a generation:
Owen says it has to be McDonnell
Owen can't really think McDonnell will win a general election. What he'll do is stitch up control of the Labour Party for the left. If they can't win power, socialist purity will be the consolation.

Last night Boris told the '22 that NIMBYism won't be tolerated and getting this generation on the property ladder was crucial. So why have so many planning decisions been gathering dust on the Secretary of State's desk for years?
These projects awaiting a decision are where a planning inspector’s report has already been submitted to @RobertJenrick's office. How can it take 3 years to make a decision when the planning inspector’s report has been submitted and has sat on the Minister’s desk for years?
Goldman Sachs just held a conference call for clients with their forecasts for #coronavirus impacts globally. 1,500 clients were on the conference call. Highlights follow;
* 50% of Americans will be infected (150 million).
* 70% of Germans will be infected (58 million)
* Peak virus in 8 weeks, declining thereafter.
Mortality rate 2%, meaning 3 million Americans will likely die. Most of those will overlap with elderly who would have died in near term. Though them dying earlier will stress health care system.
Government borrowing / overspending has risen 14.8% so far in the current financial year (April to Jan). The trouble with Big State, One Nation Toryism is that sooner or later you run out of other people's money.
This is after a decade of Chancellors consistently reducing overspending to close the deficit. The Tories promised to close the deficit in 2010, 2015 and 2017. They never did, looks like they never will.
Spending on trend under the Tories was due to fall below 38% of GDP next year. Let's see what the OBR forecasts after Rishi's first budget.
Today’s Downing Street briefing has just begun.
Back with you after the diary run through.
Asked why Gove is giving a speech to the Green Alliance conference rather than the Environment Secretary, Number 10 says his Cabinet Office brief is wide ranging.
Cabinet scheduled to sign off on HS2 tomorrow, not Thursday.
