Today IKEA has finally rolled out changes to its internal systems that will allow trans and non-binary coworkers to apply to use their chosen name. While we'll be watching to ensure that our coworkers' names are changed promptly, we feel this is a moment to celebrate.
Let's be clear: This only came because our trans coworkers spoke up about their experiences and called on IKEA to do what's right.
Deadnaming has been an issue at IKEA for years and IKEA knows it. It only decided to solve it because we coworkers pressured IKEA to do so.
We want to highlight one trans women and coworker who described the distress she felt being deadnamed daily. Being told to just legally change her name when she could not afford to do so because IKEA didn't pay her a living wage. Without her, none of this would have happened.
Her testimony inspired coworkers to repeatedly call on IKEA to stop deadnaming coworkers, which resulted in today's change.
But there are still problems with wages, work-life balance, etc. that coworkers need to solve. That's why we need a rank-and-file union at every IKEA.
Direct action in the workplace gets the goods.
If you're an IKEA worker who is tired of new hires starting at $2.00 more than you or want more time to spend with your family, then it's time to organize.
Don't know how? That's okay! We're creating lessons to teach you how!
