How Democracy came to be and what type of Governance sys are Practicing in Nigeria?

Thread🧵

Ever wondered how and why our leaders are doing like mad men OR why we see "Oppression" in every sphere in Nigeria; from Police brutality to Professors playing god with their students..
bosses oppressing their workers etc. Oppression just everywhere in Nigeria.
In order to understand why, we need to understand the history of Democracy.

DEMOCRACY 101

The idea of Democracy first started with the Greeks esp in Athens whereby folks came together and decided that
they were tired of being ruled by Kings who only acted in their selfish interest. Ever wonder why the Ooni of Ife is accorder that respect? If Ooni should COMMAND "kill that man", surely the man in question will be killed, so the Ancient Greeks started asking why Some Persons...
and their Families should have that type of power. Is Ooni having 2 heads? why should the Ooni simply wake up one day and decides he wishes to kill someone and that person will be killed (Kings are able to do this). That type of power is too wild and too much

Enter DEMOCRACY.
Democracy was the sys of Govt whereby the people choose a REPRESENTATIVE to speak for them in an ASSEMBLY of Representative to deliberate on Matters. This therefore cancelled the ability of a single person who calls himself KING to do as S/He pleases.

Also, it was agreed that...
someone would be Trusted with Powers of a KING i.e. President, Premier etc that we have today BUT S/He will be answerable to the SENATE i.e the Assembly of Representatives of the People.

Formerly, if the King collected your Land or Your wife, there was nothing you could do about
it BUT not in this new system, you could report the king to the Assembly who have the power to REMOVE THE KING. This was what Democracy Promised, No one can undo and Do as he Liked.

Greece was destroyed by other kings and the world returned to MONARCHY.

Next: Modern Democracy
The Modern form of Democracy came about in England in 1600s as a result of the long 17th-century struggle between the Stuart kings and the English people and Parliament.
The People rejected the Buharic Stuart King Charles who was just collecting money and also BANNED the...
Protestant Religion.
A fight broke out btw the King and the people of Britain esp Scotland and later spread out. The main cry was FREEDOM from expression and lavish lifestyle of the kings which impoverished the people.

Nigerians we need to start asking questions like:::
1. What is the job of Ooni of Ife and why should we respect and pay homage to him?? What is special about him? Fuck Bullshit!!!

2. Why are people like McOluomo collecting "dues" and rents from drivers, what is McOluomo doing in return for raising taxes??

This are questions that
will make us to rethink how we think about Justice and fairness for all. What is so special about our Kings?? ehn? What is so special about our Governors today?? About Buhari who is seemingly doing as he likes? How is it like El-rufai will just wake up one day and sack teachers
The British People battled their King and won, what they did after was to create an Agreement called "The Bill of Right" which they gave to the new king or queen Elizabeth to agree to before they made them Kings. The King must always agree to lead them by that document, it was a
binding contract (A Constitution if you like) btw the PEOPLE and THE KING (or President).
The era whereby a King will just decree anything as he like was over, they literally told the King: Do Crazy, See Crazy.
THEY FOUGHT FOR IT!!!

The people were to be represented through the
Parliament or if you like the Senate. The CONSTITUTION was what binded them and the President must abide by the rule of law (i.e. The Constitution) in dealing with the People.

The money your senator is spending does not belong to him but ALL OF US!
Don't say ranka dede when they
do stuff, they're merely doing the work we sent them!

Know this and let your anger go up! Why should Desmond Elliot commision a Toilet and put his pic there, did he use his money?!?.

The Problem we're having in Africa is that we still view our Leaders as KINGS whereas they're
merely a civil servant and citizen like us! No one is greater than the other!
If we can have this Mentality in Africa, A lot of things will start to change for us in Africa esp in Nigeria. This People shouldn't go scot free and do like they Please, we need to rise up and fight
for our right because apparently they're not going to give it to us freely.

There are a lot of things that we need to understand for our democracy to work like the West.
The concept of "Social Contract", "Freedom", "Basic Human Right", "Working through the Assembly", "Education"
"Rule of Law".

Are things we need to understand. currently, our leaders are simply cheating us and enjoying feudalism (a Pseudo form of Monarchy) to enrich themselves and oppress us. Look at what Buhari is doing currently.

We need to Know!!!
Nigerians never really embraced Democracy, we never understood what was going on at the turn of 1950s, only a few of us who we called "Political Fathers"🙄🙄 today knew what freedom was.

We looked up to them as "Kings", We are in a Democracy today but still acting like we are in
a Monarchy regime, we don't demand for our RIGHTS, Our Freedom, OUR TRUE LIBERTY.

This is why we view our Gov'nors today, Senators, Judges, Policemen, Boss at work, Lecturers, Professors as UNCHALLENGEABLE, we can't question them, can't call them to order. We are not Democratic
in behavior, we excuse a lot of atrocities our leaders are doing bcos we view them as "gods & kings". The Unchallengeable folks.

This is why Buhari will ORDER and not 1 Single Telco took him to court to challenge his Madness, they followed the madness and obeyed it. That's not
Democracy

It is demanding ACCOUNTABILITY from our Leaders, making sure they DO WHAT IS RIGHT and not WHAT THEY LIKE.

We have not done our true revolution, the type European people did against their Kings, a revolution by the people against Oppressive rulers. We need to do ours.

Mannnn, McOluomo is printing Money with this network of Rent Collection.

I meannnnn, it is Raw Cash!, Not equity, Not some Solid Assets somewhere, Just pure raw cash in revenues coming in Daily! Revenue can even be adjusted based on inflations.

A quick Maths:

• Say there(1/)
are 5k-10k buses plying roads in Lagos (Rough est.)

• Let's say Averagely he collects #100 per trip! as remittances (Per trip o not per day) from drivers. Therefore, He makes from drivers btw #500,000-#1M cash! Per trip!

• Again, I put at average each driver makes 5 (2/
trips per day. Therefore total monies remitted to him Becomes btw #2.5M-#5M cash Per day!!! 😭😭😭.

Not promisory Money, not Equity, Not some investments, Not solid Assets (that can lose value)... Just Pure cash!

Man doesn't have to work, doesn't have to lift a finger, (3/

With historical Data and explanations, I will want to DISAGREE with what you said here ma'am Or at Least Reframe what you said because what you said can be used to refer to a lot of scenarios.

Who are the "Citizens of Nigeria" you claim are not ready because they are...
(/1)
Not demanding good governance?.

If by this you mean the Vast majority of Nigerians that are in the lower class should demand for good governance, then I hope you know this can never be effective.

Why?

It is virtually impossible for the lower class citizens to gather and...
Demand for good governance. What do they know that they want to demand? The few among them that are "enlightened" will have their voices drown out by the many that are not. I hope you know that there will always be the ignorant, evil men (hired assassin, political thugs) and also
