Hard to know where to start with this article..... To begin with, why is the EU's desire to implement the deal both parties agreed 'theological' but the UK's aversion to dynamic alignment in any area at all not? 1/5
The Protocol was the result of a deliberate change in UK govt policy change which prioritised an absolutist Brexit (no following EU rules in any area) over the economic unity of the UK. 2/5
The dishonesty of pretending that change to the NI-GB economic relationship was not entirely foreseeable at the time of the signing of the agreement is shocking. 3/5
The overall Brexit deal is a balance involving some changes that make NI more distant from the Republic (eg services, broader legal and admin change) and a Protocol that has some compensatory changes for nationalists that keep NI aligned with the Republic and EU in other ways.4/5
With a package deal such as this you cannot identify the parts that go against your preferences (the Protocol) and seek to limit them while leaving the parts that favour your interests (the hard Brexit placing distance between NI and the Republic) untouched. 5/5
