Last Saturday night, during Pride weekend, 24-year-old Samuel Luiz Muñiz, who was gay, was killed in A Coruña by at least seven people who witnesses say attacked him and fatally injured him after calling him a “fagg*t”.
Samuel was on the street facetiming with friends when a man, who apparently thought he was filming him, approached him and warned him to “stop filming or I’ll kill you, fagg*t”.
Before Samuel could react, witnesses say the man jumped him and started beating him. His friends say they tried to intervene but couldn’t stop him.
Eventually, other people who apparently were friends with the suspect joined him and continued to beat him up, calling him a “fucking faggot”. He tried to escape but he was surrounded.
His friends found him unconscious. He died a few hours later in the hospital.
Today, thousands of people are gathering in many cities around Spain to call for justice. People are using the hashtag #justiciaparasamuel to protest on social media. This was Madrid a few minutes ago.
Spain is one of the safest countries for the LGBT community. But according to official statistics, hate crimes here rose 8.6% between ‘18 and ’19 (no official figures for 2020 yet). elpais.com/economia/2021/…
There is still a lot of work to do in this country (and having a far-right political party that vilifies and stigmatizes the LGBTQIA+ community is certainly making things a lot worse).
If this is happening here, imagine what’s happening in many others where you could get the death penalty simply for loving someone.
Remember this every time you hear someone say they don’t understand why we still need Pride. Why we were calling for Madrid’s Town Hall to fly the rainbow flag.
No, it’s not just about a flag.
🔴 [Update] Spanish media is saying three people have been arrested in connection to Samuel's murder. elpais.com/sociedad/2021-…
🔴 [Update] The president of Galicia's regional govt, where the crime took place, says it's "shocking that such a brutal murder could take place in a quiet city like A Coruña, where the crime rate is extremely low".
He also asked people to “avoid speculating”about the motive.
🔴 [Update] The three people (two men, one woman) arrested are being charged as perpetrator, accomplice and for "encouraging" the crime.
Local authorities say they are aged 20, 23 and 25, have no criminal records and don't belong to any gang or organization.
