Leftists argue all day on this site about what the left should be, how it should act, who should be part of it, etc. When really we're too small to actually accomplish anything, and if that ever changes we'll all be insignificant specks in whatever big event leads to that change.
It's like we're all here going "Okay gang, here's what the left needs to do:", and if anything actually does happen and there is significant leftward movement it's going to be like a tidal wave blasting over a bunch of kids playing with sand castles on the beach. We're the kids.
Doesn't mean we shouldn't act and shouldn't keep pushing for change, it just means that if the revolution finally does arrive it will do so via forces which have nothing to do with any of us. It won't move according to our rules or our plans. We won't have any control over it.
Because things are so very much more locked-in than most people realize, the only thing which could lead to meaningful change is a critical mass of people rising up and forcing that change. We're so very far from that that if it occurs it will mean something wildly unprecedented.
I don't see it as sad, just humbling. It's not hopeless, it just means there's probably no Hollywood ending where we kick the bad guy into lava and everyone tells us we're awesome. If there is a happy ending, it likely won't be an egoically gratifying one.

There's plenty of room for hope, in my opinion. I am convinced that humanity has the potential to pass this test. I just don't think our doing so will have a lot to do with the plans we lay out in our little online circle here from day to day.

Let me try to put it another way:
Anti-imperialist socialists are a tiny minority in our society. If socialism and anti-imperialism do become manifest realities, it will be because our numbers swelled exponentially. If that happens we'll naturally be just a very small part of it.

And if our numbers do swell exponentially, it will be because something drastic and unexpected happened. It doesn't seem likely that that drastic and unexpected event will have had a lot to do with our day-to-day bickering on this website. The whole thing will be far beyond us.
