Yesterday Israel voted down one of its most racist laws which had prohibited Palestinians w/Israeli citizenship from having their West Bank or Gaza spouses to live w/them
Stop, 🛑 wait, don’t applaud or get excited. Read the full 🧵1/7
The apartheid law, which was up for renewal, did not fail bc there was an increase in support for equality & Palestinian rights thanks to the new “change” govt. It failed bc Netanyahu wanted to humiliate the new PM & show that Bennett’s govt is weak. 2/7
To this end, Netanyahu got his far-right bloc to vote against the apartheid law they view as essential.
On Bennett’s side, two parties in his coalition, Ra’am & Meretz, should have voted against the law and celebrated its defeat. They didn’t. 3/7
Ra’am should have voted against the racist law bc Ra’am are Palestinians. Ra’am’s leader, however, & all but 2 members of Ra’am voted for it—a shameful betrayal of their people.
Meretz should have voted against it bc Meretz professes to be a pro-Palestinian rights party 4/7
Bennett got Ra’am & Meretz to vote against their people, interests, & principles by reducing the law’s extension from 1 yr to 6 months & promising to create a committee to examine how to reduce bureaucratic hurdles for Palestinians that Israel doesn’t mind having 5/7
The Palestinians Israel doesn’t mind having, in theory, are ones that won’t procreate, thereby not threatening the Jewish majority.
*If you believe the compromise would have resulted in more Pals getting residency & citizenship, I’ve got a NYC to Jerusalem bridge to sell you 6/7
What does it mean that the racist law failed: on one hand it’s always good to get an apartheid law off Israel’s books. But, on the other hand, Israel will simply now use bureaucracy & open racism to deny Palestinian family unification. 7/7

🧵Naftali Bennett may in the next few days replace Netanyahu as Prime Minister. As this is being widely applauded, even on the left, here are some choice Bennett quotes to give you pause:
2013: “I’ve killed many Arabs in my life and there’s no problem with that”
2016: “We [Jews] must give our lives" to annex the West Bank to Israel.”
This quote evokes the Kahanist (Jewish KKK) ideology that violence & terrorism should be used to secure Israel as an etho-nationalist state. For context/history, see my previous thread👇🏼
Exact 2016 quote: “On the matter of the Land of Israel, we have to move from holding action to a decision. We have to mark the dream, and the dream is that Judea and Samaria will be part of the sovereign State of Israel. We have to act today, and WE MUST GIVE OUR LIVES.”
🧵in 1994, Dr Baruch Goldstein, a settler & follower of Rabbi Meir Kahane, burst into the Ibrahimi mosque in the West Bank city of Hebron. Goldstein, opened fire, massacring 29 Palestinian Muslims in worship & injuring 125 before being wrestled to the ground & killed. 1/5
Kahanism, from Meir Kahane’s teachings, is a Jewish supremacist ideology promoting violence & terrorism against Palestinians to secure a Jewish ethno-state.
Kahanism (Israel’s Kach party) is alive & flourishing today & represented by members of Knesset 2/5
In 2016, Naftali Bennett, who is likely to replace Netanyahu this month as prime minister of Israel said: “We [Jews] must give our lives" for the cause of annexing the West Bank to Israel. 3/5
🧵You can’t make this sh*% up! @NatGeo is having @GalGadot, self-designated defender of Israeli genocide, host a series about indigenous people being displaced. Watch the video and sign @CODEPINK’s petition
Gal Gadot served in the Israeli military as a combat trainer during Israel’s brutal 2006 war in Lebanon when indiscriminate Israeli airstrikes killed about 900 civilians.
