One of the biggest SEO lessons I learned the hard way:
Targetting the wrong search keywords

Here is what I learned 👇
What are search keywords?

A search keyword is a word or set of words a user enters when searching on Google or another search website.
When I was starting out, I did what most people would do

I thought about what my clients would be searching for and found the search keyword with the highest search volume

In my case, the keyword was Calgary web design Image
I didn't know much about keyword difficulty (or was maybe overconfident) at the time and looked mainly at the monthly search volume

I created a page targetting this keyword and tried to hit all of the appropriate SEO signals
I also added a lot of features to my page and went after acquiring backlinks aggressively

But no matter what, the best I could do for this keyword was result 20-30th on Google

I was getting a bit discouraged at this point
But everything changed when I started to learn more about keyword difficulty and doing proper keyword research

I started looking for other opportunities that may not be as popular (volume-wise) but would still land good leads
I started looking at keywords that are more related to my niche

Although the volume for WordPress developer Calgary isn't as high, it's much easier to rank for

The difficulty is easy but the leads are much more valuable and I am now ranked #3 on google for that keyword Image
Even though the volume is quite low, I get a few quality leads every month

The lesson here is, perform some keyword research and go after long tail or less competitive keywords

It leads to better results and a more rewarding experience
I continue to find other gems that have higher search volume but lower difficulty

Once you discover how to do this, a lot of opportunities open up

It takes time and patience but it really pays off when you do find these hidden gems

Top 5 mistakes I made as a WordPress freelancer and how to avoid them 👇
1⃣

Not standardizing my tools for new website builds

Pick a set of tools and learn them inside and out.

For example, use the same themes, builders, and processes to cut down on costs and build duration.
2⃣

Asking clients to buy their own hosting instead of managing it for them.

This is a great income stream for agencies.

Pick a good hosting company that you can partner with as an affiliate and resell hosting.

Wow, so close to 10k Twitter friends

Unbelievable 🤩

I had no idea that when I started tweeting last year that I would ever reach 10k

Here are some tips if you want to get there 👇
When you're starting out, getting traction is hard

Pick a niche and stick to it

Find big accounts in that niche and interact with them

This will increase your visibility and get you initial followers
Share stuff that you know or that you are learning (related to your niche)

You don't have to be an expert

Tweeting what you are learning is also a great way to grow

I have built my agency by launching and maintaining WordPress websites

Here is a thread with 🔟 most common WordPress questions answered

👇
Is WordPress free?

WordPress is an open-source project. It's free to download, modify, and use. You will need a hosting account to launch your own WordPress site.

WordPress .com is different. It's a paid subscription-based product for blogging and building websites (like Wix)
Do I need to know PHP to work with WordPress?

Not unless you are planning to create your own themes and plugins. PHP is also useful for troubleshooting WordPress.

You won't need it in order to create and launch websites however.

Creating contact and other types of forms is really easy in WordPress

Here are some of my favorite ways to accomplish this 👇
Contact Form 7 is a popular free WordPress builder.

Here is how to create a form using this plugin:

I use Elementor Pro, which allows users to create simple forms (it works great for contact forms).
