So I am still learning a lot about the details. And I am probably too close to many involved the controversy to have a clear view of all the facts.
But I do want to say that as of now I disagree with the calls for @StewartRuch to resign. That outcome seems premature. #acnatoo
I absolutely believe the allegations against Mark Riverra. I say this as someone who once knew him and his family very well, over a period of several years. I believe the victims deserve truth, transparency, and justice. I think they deserve to be heard.
But I disagree that the complete picture of everything that has transpired in the last two years has been made public.
As best as I understand, numerous mistakes were made. I believe some form of correction from the college of bishops and ecclesial restructuring is in order.
But I also think, based on everything I know as someone who was once close to all those involved (or at least very close to those who knew all parties very well) that there is a lot of important context and culture about Big Rock and Rez that is missing in the public speculation.
Anyhow, I plan to reach out to the investigation firm to share my own experiences with Mark and the surrounding culture he was a part of. I am grieved that Rez did not hire a victim oriented and trusted firm and I fear that was very costly error.
But I also think there is not enough public information available right now to make judgements about the future of church/diocesan leadership. I hope that this matter will be fully investigated by @The_ACNA. But I caution snap judgments about tangential figures to Mark’s abuse.
I am not currently a member of an ACNA church. I haven’t attended Rez in almost a decade. I only rarely catch up with old friends and acquaintances from that season of life. I have no personal stake in this beyond deepened spiritual confusion about a vulnerable period in my past.
I don’t share this from a place of clarity, rather from a place of confusion. But I do I understand the context of these accusations better than most everyone else commenting on this website about #acnatoo - aside from the victims themselves.
So I want full, transparent investigations, I want hard questions to be asked of spiritual leaders, I want to see major shifts in culture and leadership, and I want no outcome off the table - but I also urge caution in how we respond before all investigations have finished.
