Just a quick media lesson.

Notice this brief Haitian history in this article. Notice how it COMPLETELY jumps over the fact that independent Haiti was intentionally held back by colonial powers determined to keep them in debt and under military control.

This is not an accident.
The conventional story, the convenient story, is that Haiti just…can’t get it together. That its people of color were able to fight for independence but unable to maintain working government.

This frame not only hides white supremacist, capitalist oppression, but legitimizes it
Accounts of Haitian history in major media almost always gloss over the French putting them in debt for buying their own freedom, how major powers used that debt for leverage, and excuses for racist US invasions and occupations that were treated as “kind” and “paternal.”
The point is this: conventional media history is a story with a purpose. It makes a digestible, US/capitalist friendly reality where messy and true, undisputable facts are almost always paved over in favor of a mythology that perpetuates power and control.

Donald Rumsfeld was not only a war criminal, but played a key role in creating our current political crisis and inspiring the rise of fascism.

For our sake, we must understand the cruel elitism he represented and that currently threatens us all.

Though many want to rehabilitate the Bush Administration in the wake of Trump, we have to understand just how much blame they deserve for our current crisis.

The damage they caused will reverberate for generations and we have to reckon with how and why it happened.

2/
To begin, on September 11th, as intelligence agencies told the Bush Administration Al-Qaeda was responsible for the attacks, Donald Rumsfeld was already planning an illegal war against Iraq, using the attacks as cover.

It was a matter of convenience and opportunity.

Please. I’m begging you.

Stop searching for coherence in the Right’s positions and “outrages.”

The incoherence is intentional and necessary so that they can find any advantage at any moment to protect white capitalist oppression, which is, again, inherently contradictory.
For decades now people have made a living point out the hypocrisy on the Right. It doesn’t do anything because shame as a political force is extinct.

Point out the contradiction, explain what it means. Highlight what they’re doing, not what they’re saying.
There are no principles. There are no platforms. The Right does whatever it needs to do and adopts whatever position it needs to in the moment.

It’s a runaway train laying track as it charges ahead. Attributing coherence only helps them continue dashing along.

The problem is quite simple and people want to dance around it.

This country’s political institutions were founded and constructed intentionally to serve the whims of white, wealthy men at the expense of everyone else.

They’re working as designed.
The basis of America’s government and economy is that white, wealthy men are inherently more talented. Wiring the machine to preference them has not only hurt others, it’s held back necessary change and innovation while also prioritizing increasing Right Wing extremism.
The issue is that we’re in incredible denial because white supremacist institutions rely on indoctrination, mythologies that are ingrained from childhood in. Our culture denies the very real, very poisonous fact that we are drowning in white supremacy and it’s killing us.

You don’t have to watch the endless, exhausting, meaningless political shows or pay attention to pundits who make an exorbitant living offering up bad faith, politics-as-a-game takes and “analysis.”

It’s an industry. A racket. Turn it off, find out what’s actually going on.
Politics has been turned into spectacle, a reality show that fuels round the clock reality TV shows and an entire population of people who afford four homes off worthless, status quo protecting garbage.

We have to choose to be better and reject this nonsense.
Political entertainment is designed to make you feel like you’re watching a scripted TV show where you get to weigh in every two to four years, a phenomena almost completely beyond your control.

It’s heartless and cynical and has done unfathomable damage.

So. A lot of people want to believe the GOP will heal itself or "return to normal."

But we have to talk about how the Right, from the moment of their origin, has used wild-eyed, antisemitic conspiracy theories to justify oppression and fascism.

People are delusional in thinking that Donald Trump represented an aberration with the GOP and that as soon as he was gone things would return to "normal."

The truth is that Trump represented the true, actual nature of the Right and their racist white supremacy.

What we are watching with antidemocratic violence, voter repression, racist conspiracy theories, attempted coups, and this daily horror show in which shared society and representative democracy are imperiled isn't new...it's what the Right does.

It's who they are.

Over and over again history shows that the Right is animated by paranoid fears of conspiracies that allow them to enact widespread oppression, surveillance, and violence in order to protect their power and increase their wealth.

It’s the only consistent mindset.
Honestly, it’s staggering. I knew in researching the new book I’d find the Right infected with conspiratorial thinking, but it’s throughout the centuries. Consistent, uninterrupted paranoia that legitimizes oppression. Instance after instance after instance.
The point is this: the paranoid, conspiratorial ramblings we’re dealing with are not novel. They’re ever present. And when they heat up like we’re seeing, especially when the Right recognizes it’s losing control, it inspires massive oppression and violence.
