Even if you do not have humanitarian impulses, you should be deeply invested in vaccinating the whole world. Every person is a possible vector for a new mutation. New mutations can translate into increased transmissibility, mortality, or, worst case: vaccine resistance
Data are still being collected on the new Lambda variant, but preliminary reports suggest it could be more deadly, more transmissible, &/or more resistant to vaccines. 1st case was noted in Peru in 12/20. It now accounts for 80% of cases in Peru & has spread to 30 countries
The other "worse case," in addition to vaccine resistance, is a variant that is more dangerous to children. All of these are reasons why it is imperative for the U.S. & other wealthy countries to ensure the entire globe gets vaccinated as soon as possible
Additionally, if poorer countries are spending all of their public health funds on COVID vaccines, that could lead to other infectious disease outbreaks, such as TB or Ebola. It is also in the interest of the entire globe to prevent this from happening
