COVID in NSW, Chaos and Strange Attractors (a stupidly long thread)
Chaos theory is a branch of mathematics focusing on the study of dynamic systems governed by deterministic laws involving feedback loops that are highly sensitive to initial conditions. /2
This sensitivity to initial conditions generates deterministic but apparently random systems. This behaviour is known as deterministic chaos. Chaotic systems are characterised by a set or field of initial conditions that can result in wildly oscillating behaviour. /3
In many cases chaotic behaviour is found only in a subset of these initial conditions as the field includes an attractor, a region of stability to which a large set of initial conditions eventually converge. /4
A classical chaotic model, the Hunter-Prey Model, involves in interaction between two species, one of prey, whose numbers rise when not predated on, and fall when hunted, and one of hunter, whose numbers fall when prey are rare, and rise when prey are plenty. /5
Depending on the initial conditions (numbers of prey, numbers of hunters, the effect of prey and hunter numbers on prey survival, the effect of prey and hunter numbers on hunter survival) the system often generates oscillations in prey and hunter numbers. /6
These oscillations are relatively stable for a period time before before increasing in magnitude of swing, and decreasing stability of periodicity. Many starting conditions eventually result in collapse into one or other of 2 attractors: death of all prey or death of hunters. /7
The Delta COVD outbreak in NSW has some remarkable characteristics that resemble the the Hunter-Prey Model. Numbers of infections rise when people crowd in public spaces; high case numbers discourage the crowing of people, social distancing reduce case numbers. /8
There are two obvious attractors - the virus can be eliminated, halting the chaotic system until virus is reseeded; or there is unconstrained spread, resulting in a collapse of social supports. /9
Between these two are a range of outcomes involving periodic swings in case numbers, which may convert to greater swings of less stable periodicity at they approach one of the attractors. /10
While this model can’t be used to accurately predict case numbers day-to-day, it can be used to draw general conclusions about the likely future if conditions are not altered in a meaningful way. /11
The current large oscillations in COVID case numbers in NSW, and loss of regular periodicity gives every indication of the State moving away from the previously experienced relative stability towards the attractor of unconstrained spread. /12
If this is a chaotic system, this behaviour is a direct result of the existing public health settings in the state, and failure to alter the public health settings will maintain progress to collapse into the attractor. /13
It would therefore be necessary to change the relationships between case numbers and human behaviour by the adoption of stronger public health measures that are not weakened in response to falls in infection numbers, but maintained until community infections are eradicated. <end>

So let's talk about Skeeter's four finger plan: 1st finger - that's nothing; it's more of the same. Let's skip for a minute to 4th finger, because if that isn't possible, then the two in between need to be considered on their own merits, not as a means to an end. /2
4th finger: "A complete return to normal life with quarantine-free travel for all those who are vaccinated, and no lockdowns or border closures remaining." Issue 1 is that about 5% of people can't be effectively vaccinated primarily due to health issues. /3
Issue 2 is that he has no intention of vaccinating people under the age of 16 - That's a little under 25% of the population. Issue 3 is that AZ has an efficacy of about 70% and it has been designated for use in 20% of the population - so another 2% not covered. /4

A letter to NSW from VIC. Hi guys. The situation you are in is a challenge, but it isn't one that you can't rise to, master, and move on. Yes, your Premier is a self promoting twit. It kind of doesn't matter, because you, the people of NSW, can stop COVID in its tracks. /2
All you have to do, is stay home. Keep your home well ventilated - it might be a bit chilly, but that's okay. Catch some exercise each day - especially if the sun is shining. Compress shopping to one trip/week if you can, and use QR codes. /3
Make this time at home a special time. If you are being bullied at work, you are free from those bastards now. If you have a long commute, you now have 3 hours/day more time for yourself. Reconnect with your spouse. Cook wonderful meals. Have a nice drink. /4

There I was quietly swimming in my lane, and next thing I know, Alan Kohler damn near drowns me as he steams past in my lane, asking biomedical/health questions in a press conference. So I'm going to return the favour: Let's talk about the economy. /2
My thesis is that what seems "Fair is foul, and foul is fair:
Hover through the fog and filthy air." Things seem great on the face of it. Unemployment is said to be low; housing and stocks are going gangbusters; there are more luxury cars on the streets than ever before... /3
On the other hand, they cannot be. Our economy is missing the 1 million foreign tertiary students it used to contain - at one time, our largest export. Those students lived in (mostly) apartments that are now empty, and given our failure in vaccination, will likely stay so. /4

So we wake to another new day in out country ruled by the depraved, perverts and credibly accused rapists, and their fellow travellers. The Perverts' Party has long held that anyone accused of depravity or sexual assault in their party should not face an investigation. /2
In the past, this has been achieved (whether by intent or accident) by wiping public records, getting the AFP to sequester documents from the relevant police force, & running defamation suits against news services. But yesterday they hit a new low. Perverts rejoice! /3
Yesterday, a member of the Senate, Larissa Waters, tried to introduce a private member’s bill for an inquiry into rape allegations against a Minister of the Government. The government blocked the introduction of the bill. /4

I just want to say, that we have had a state in Australia fighting down, not one, but two super-spreader variants of COVID. By they time the first case was found, it was already in two aged care facilities. And the team was already over week behind. /2
Never achieved before - to suppress either variant anywhere. So what support did the Federal Government offer this state? Almost nothing. Promises of more vaccines. Distractions of an ex-Attorney General fighting democracy. Distractions of a media tart with observer status. /3
And the tame, in house, Federal Government-alligned media groups in a demented, feral rant against: learning, study, science, logic, reasoning, compassion, caution, and common sense. If we ever survive these idiots, it will be a bloody miracle. /4

@denniallen @AnimaeOK Most of the mainstream media are effectively the same politico/propaganda organisation:
1) #Newscorpse was founded by Rupert Murdoch, the son of the man who founded the Liberal Party, Keith Murdoch. /2
@denniallen @AnimaeOK 2) The Chair of the ABC, Ita Buttrose held election fund raisers for the Liberal Party and was hand picked by Liberal Leader, Scott Morrison in breach of the accepted selection procedure. /3
@denniallen @AnimaeOK 3) The Nine Entertainment Co, which also publishes the ex-Fairfax newspapers Age and Sydney Morning Herald, is Chaired by Ex-Liberal Treasurer Peter Costello. /4
