SCOOP: At least six state lawmakers affiliated with business lobbying group ALEC were recently active members of the neo-Confederate group Sons of Confederate Veterans, which puts up monuments to the Confederacy and distorts the history of the Civil War. exposedbycmd.org/2021/07/08/ale…
ALEC helps lawmakers & lobbyists write model bills. It doesn't have a model bill on monuments, but ALEC CEO Lisa Nelson signed a letter last year approving of Trump's executive order imposing harsh penalties on those who damage monuments. exposedbycmd.org/2021/07/08/ale…
These six southern state legislators have either been ALEC members or have attended ALEC annual meetings. The group keeps its membership secret and claims they're no longer members, but pols often re-register just before annual meetings. exposedbycmd.org/2021/07/08/ale…

SCOOP: We obtained the first public tax records of right-wing site The Federalist's nonprofit foundation.

It took in $800k in 2019, and we've identified the donors behind most of that money. exposedbycmd.org/2021/06/15/rev…
The Federalist is known for publishing defenses of Trump, Covid conspiracy theories, & racist posts.

I cannot emphasize enough the significance of rightwing billionaires who bankroll the GOP giving hundreds of thousands of dollars to help Yang.

They would not spend this money if they didn't think Yang is the best viable candidate to protect their enormous wealth & power.

NEW: Parler's new interim CEO, Mark Meckler, is a rightwing activist who wants to radically rewrite the Constitution to shrink the federal government. exposedbycmd.org/2021/02/15/par…
Majority shareholder Rebekah Mercer brought Meckler on as she fired the previous CEO. Also on the "executive committee" is Matthew Richardson, a far-right British Ukip operative & Steve Bannon ally who once said that bigots deserve representation. exposedbycmd.org/2021/02/15/par…

We need a comprehensive, honest reckoning of how we got to this moment when a mob of people are willing to invade the Capitol to overturn the democratic process. While there are many different factors, a key one is the lengthy GOP campaign of lies about voter fraud.
This is a phenomenon that I and many other journalists have been tracking for years. Trump’s job as coup leader would have been more difficult w/o his party & numerous allied groups spreading propaganda about nonexistent fraud, suing against state voting laws, scaring their base.
For years the GOP, aided by outside legal & advocacy groups & think tanks, have fearmongered about allegedly fraudulent voters, attacking voting laws, passing voter ID bills, suing states to purge their voter rolls, even fighting things like high school civics programs.

It is baffling to me that people WHO WERE THE TARGETS OF THE INSURRECTION, LITERALLY THE PEOPLE WHOSE LIVES WERE JUST AT RISK can possibly argue *against* holding the ringleader accountable. How are these people like this? How?

Interesting how the Republican politicians who inspired the deadly, fascist coup attempt spent the year trying to get antifascists—the ones who challenge the types of people who ransacked the Capitol & killed a cop—classified as terrorists.
This is classic fascist propaganda tactics. You inspire violent acts on behalf of your leader and then blame them on the opposing side. Cruz went to far as to sponsor the bill & hold a hearing on nonexistent antifa violence. All of this is meant to exonerate the actual criminals.
Cruz & other Republicans (& rightwing think tanks like the Heritage Foundation) have embraced and promoted white nationalists’ biggest propagandist, Andy Ngo, whose job it is to invent antifa violence as his extremist allies terrorize communities.
