Subways and highways were turned into rivers in New York City on Thursday as a result of severe weather and flooding brought on by Tropical Storm Elsa.
Elsa is the first major storm of the 2021 Atlantic hurricane season in the U.S. Viral videos of its impact have been shared widely across social media, often with calls for local & federal lawmakers to get serious about infrastructure investments in the face of our climate crisis
‘Remember like two weeks ago when conservatives tried to convince us that infrastructure had nothing to do with the climate crisis?’ tweeted @Public_Citizen .
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also chimed in, shading her fellow lawmakers in the Senate by saying: ‘I’m so glad the filibuster is here to fix this oh wait.’

This footage shows a portion of the ongoing Beckwourth Complex Fire, which has ballooned to more than 12,000 acres, prompting mandatory evacuations in the area around Plumas National Forest in Northern California.
The fires were sparked last week by lightning in an area that has experienced severe drought and dry conditions of late. Smoke from the fire is currently even visible from Reno, NV across state lines.
New reporting on July 8 makes it clear: we are living through a climate emergency. According to an Associated Press article published Thursday, the number of wildfires and burned land in California so far in 2021 'greatly exceed totals for the same period' in 2020.
