A friend shared this via fb, and while I appreciate the attempted distancing from evangelicalism, the idea that there was a evangelical past that was more "pure," intellectually engaged, and committed to forms of justice is a harmful, naive fantasy. 1/4 christianitytoday.com/edstetzer/2021…
Evangelicalism has always, always been in the service of white supremacy, colonialism, capitalism, & misogyny. Through its earlier forms of puritanism, it has long been a tool of subjugation & slavery, insisting on prescriptive (i.e. "godly") social structures & institutions. 2/4
I'm thinking of @C_Stroop's work on Christian supremacy & the belief that there are "real" and "fake" Christians. She argues, it's "baked into the American public sphere." It is impossible to unmoor evangelicalism from structural forms of domination. religiondispatches.org/stop-trying-to… 3/4
(I say this as someone who grew up evangelical, was harmed by it, and STILL (at 35) deprogramming and processing my anger. Is now mostly agnostic but attends regular Quaker meetings). Despite the good intentions, these kinds of think-pieces really get stuck in my craw. 4/4
