A dynasty ends in an assassination.

Without strong contenders, an aged, childless politician is elected as the new Emperor.

The future of a young new Empire hangs in balance.

Story in the evening ...
Marcus Cocceius Nerva was born around 30 AD to Marcus Cocceius Nerva and Sergia Plautilla. He came from a Roman noble family with ties to the imperial family and Nerva continued in the same vain becoming Praetor Elect in 65. 1/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nerva#/media/File:Togato,_I_se
In 65, Nerva is supposed to have played an important role in revealing a conspiracy to assassinate Emperor Nero. But in 68, Nero got himself killed bringing the imperial dynasty to an end. Without an heir, the Empire plunged into chaos as different factions sought power. 2/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pisonian_conspiracy#/media/Fil
With the collapse of Alexander's Macedon Empire after his death not that long ago serving as a reminder, Rome saw four Emperors attain power in 69 depending on their control of the city of Rome. Fortunately, the last one, Vespasian, managed to hold on to it for keeps. 3/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_of_the_Four_Emperors#/med
With two adult sons, Vespasian, was seen as a more stable contender and thus the Flavian dynasty was born. Nerva soon found himself as the Consul of Rome, the technical joint Head of State for Rome, along side Vespasian in 71. 4/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vespasian#/media/File:Vespasia
Nerva continued to be an influential politician returning to Consulship in 90, along with Domitian. Domitian was Vespasian's younger son and had become Emperor in 81 after Vespasian's elder son, Titus, died. 5/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domitian#/media/File:Domiziano
But Domitian was also unpopular. Though he worked to make the Empire an efficient system, his autocratic rule led to his undoing with his assassination in 96. This also led to another problem. With no surviving children, Domitian had no heir and the Senate was in a quandary. 6/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Senate#/media/File:Cicer
In his 60s with no children, Nerva would have been an unlikely choice for the throne. But the Senate entrusted him with the imperium, perhaps looking at him as a stop gap arrangement hoping for a better ruler by the time Nerva died. 7/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nerva#/media/File:Nerva_Aureus
Though some of Domitian's excesses were reversed, the ones that worked were retained. Nerva also brought back trusted veterans and statemen from retirement like Sextus Frontinus, a former general put in charge of the Roman aqueducts. 8/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aqua_Traiana#/media/File:Aqua_
But Nerva faced rebellions as well. Though he did not suppress them strongly, he adopted an heir to guide the future course of the Empire - Marcus Ulpius Trajanus, a general with links to the Flavians, Consul in 91 and whom Nerva had made Governor of Germania Superior. 9/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trajan#/media/File:Traianus_Gl
Nerva died the following year in 98. A short reign, but one that prevented the chaos Rome saw after the death of Nero. Marcus Ulpius Trajanus became the Emperor and brought it to its greatest territorial extent, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Irish Sea. 10/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trajan#/media/File:Roman_Empir

25 years later, the brother of the French King who was dethroned (and executed later) became King of France. The Old World Order stuck around for a bit longer in Europe, and the oldest and the most diverse dynasty of Europe, the Capets / Robertiners, ruled France till 1848. 1/11
Thread on the 8 prominent rulers and 2 notable consorts of this dynasty on whom I have written so far. The earliest among them was before Capets were called Capets and from when France was not called France. 2/11

Next was his nephew who chose not to be a King. 3/11

Lucius Tarquinius was born in 6th century BC in Rome. He was the son (more likely grandson) of Lucius Tarquinius Priscus, King of Rome. The time of the Roman Kingdom is semi legendary, but there were written records of Lucius Tarquinius in existence till 2,000 years ago. 1/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucius_Tarquinius_Superbus#/me

The Kitex Conundrum

We have had a huge controversy over raids at Kitex Garments and their subsequent plan to invest ₹3,500 crore (₹1,000 crore initially) in Telangana instead of Kerala.

But what got me interested was the spike in their stock.

thenewsminute.com/article/kitex-… 1/7
While the spike may look huge in a week, their 5 year numbers are not rosy. But their market capitalization is only around ₹1,000 crore, a far cry from the ₹3,500 they are looking to invest.

So, are they looking to borrow or expecting new investors?

Their investment rhetoric is not new though. They had plans to invest ₹262 crore in 2013, but looked towards other Indian states like Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, and even Sri Lanka and China at the time. 3/7

Jan Sobieski was born in 1629 to Jakub Sobieski and Zofia Danilowiczova. He belonged to the nobility of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth with his father and maternal ancestors becoming the Voivode of various Voivodeships of the Commonwealth. 1/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_III_Sobieski#/media/File:
Well educated, Sobieski travelled Europe in his early years and took part in the battles the Commonwealth had to deal with, when Jan Kazimierz became King in 1648. He showed good potential for a future military career, though his elder brother, Marek, died in these wars. 2/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banner_(cavalry)#/media/File:C
