Worried—We are now seeing lots of outdoor-only #DeltaVariant transmission between strangers with no direct contact. These sports attendees weren’t even sitting together—likely fleeting transmission at “pinch points” (bottlenecks) at stadium🏟 gates. This would change everything.
2) We’ve seen mega outbreaks at outdoors music concerts in Netherlands for example…
3) there is now a new outdoor masking requirement in NSW Australia 🇦🇺 because of this outdoors risk.
4) Sporting events also very risky due to after parties and side pub gatherings. This was my main worry before. But seeing the NSW 🇦🇺 cases of sport spectators having no other contact worries me.
5) the Netherlands concert was part of this surge. We can’t have these large gatherings amid #DeltaVariant I worry. India 🇮🇳 epidemic was also spurred by religious gatherings — which were almost all outdoors too. Now making more sense how India had such a huge outbreak.
6) Also the Scotland vs England soccer ⚽️ game likely contributed to this mega outbreak too. Again mainly outdoors.
7) How is outdoor transmission even possible with #DeltaVariant but wasn’t possible before? Well, bad news from Guangdong CDC—“The viral loads in Delta infections were ~1000 times higher than (earlier) strain infections [on day 1 of positive test].” ⚠️wow.
8) #DeltaVariant also yields faster peak viral load—“results showed the time interval from the exposure to first PCR positive in the quarantined population was 6.00 (IQR 5.00-8.00) days in the 2020 epidemic and was 4.00 days in the 2021 epidemic (peak at 3.71 days).” 👀 damn. Image
9) as result, “In response to this notable viral parameter, the government required people leaving the Guangzhou city from airports, train stations and shuttle bus stations to show proof of a negative COVID-19 within 72 hours on June 6 and further shorten into 48 hours on June 7”
10) in light of the above #DeltaVariant data, these partying at a nightclub in London as coronavirus restrictions are lifted by callous Boris Johnson and @sajidjavid are pretty insane.

11) several other “fleeting exposures” traced in NSW Australia are pretty worrisome - all were strangers. This has been found multiple times now.
12) This follows the other shopping mall case in which the index case passed within 60 centimeters of another man for mere “seconds”. This is the #DeltaVariant that is dominating UK 🇬🇧, ravaged India 🇮🇳, and surging across Europe and US right now.
13) Want proof of another outdoor fleeting transmission case? Here it is — an outdoor cafe infection of fleeting contact — confirmed via even genomic sequencing to match the exact virus strain!! This is very strong proof it happened. This is why I worry - multiple bad signals.
14) And as reminder — #DeltaVariant is leaps and bounds faster transmission than any other variant. Dr @larrybrilliant, who led smallpox eradication, even says Delta is more transmissible than smallpox!!! And it took his team years to eradicate smallpox!
15) we must be much more vigilant with of our pandemic restriction and be very wary of lifting them when #DeltaVariant is surging. It can quickly get out of control very easy given how infectious it is.

📈NEW RULES—@CDCDirector Walensky announces new mask guidance, regardless of #COVID19 vaccination, due to surging #DeltaVariant:

📌Wear masks indoors, in public areas with ‘high transmission’ (why not all?)

📌All K-12 schools wear a mask indoors. More—🧵
2) “some vaccinated people infected with the #DeltaVariant after vaccination may be contagious and spread the virus to others.”

We have known this for MONTHS. A little late but better than never.
3) @CDCDirector: “the big concern is that the next variant that might emerge, just a few mutations potentially away, could eventually evade our vaccine… for hospitalization & death.”

note: breakthrough mild infections allows transmission too. #Maskup

BREAKING—CDC reverses course—CDC is expected to recommend on Tuesday that people vaccinated for the coronavirus resume wearing masks indoors. The change follows reports of rising breakthrough infections with the #Deltavariant. ➡️ ABOUT DAMN TIME! #COVID19 nytimes.com/2021/07/27/hea…
2) the new guidance would mark a sharp turnabout from the agency’s position since May that vaccinated people do not need to wear masks in most indoor spaces.
3) As recently as last week, an agency spokesman said that C.D.C. had no plans to change its guidance, unless there were a significant change in the science. Federal officials met on Sunday night to review new evidence that may have prompted the reversal. cnn.com/2021/07/27/pol…

Damnit - there are again ZERO ICU beds available in the state of Arkansas (one of the lowest vaccinated states in the US). This means many others beside #COVID19 patients in the hospital awaiting beds may die. #vaccinate please for the love of god.

2) Anyone else see a vicious cycles happening if we know Covid infection and hospitalization also leads to IQ drop?
3) what’s worse is when we no longer have hospitals beds for kids. Pediatric hospitalizations soaring in multiple countries with #DeltaVariant

⚠️“SUBSTANTIAL DROP” in intelligence—#COVID19 survivors suffer severe cognitive deficit. Patients hospitalised on ventilators saw the biggest drop in on intelligence tests—equal to a **7-point drop in IQ**!
Larger than suffering stroke or lead poisoning!🧵news.sky.com/story/covid-19… Image
2) researchers found those who had contracted COVID saw the greatest underperformance on tasks requiring reasoning, planning and problem-solving compared to those who had not had the virus. ➡️ but they found a significant (starred) drop **even in mild patients too**! #LongCovid Image
3) "These results accord with reports of long-COVID, where 'brain fog', trouble concentrating and difficulty finding the correct words are common." the authors report.

Vaccine trials for kids 5-11 expanded—possibly delayed. F.D.A. has asked the companies to include 3,000 children in the 5-to-11-year-old group, roughly double the original number of study participants. Unclear if EUA approval will be delayed or not. 🧵
2) Pfizer is on a faster timetable than Moderna, and may be able to meet F.D.A.’s expectations on a bigger trial size and still file a request to expand emergency authorization by the end of September. Reviewing all the safety and efficacy data will likely take FDA a few weeks.
3) Pfizer has previously said it expects to have results for the 5-to-11-year-old group in September, with results for children aged 2 to 5 shortly after that. A spokeswoman said Monday that the company had no updates on its timetable.

“The [nuclear missile] silo construction at Yumen and Hami constitutes the most significant expansion of the Chinese nuclear arsenal ever,” says ⁦@mattkorda⁩ of ⁦@FAScientists, author of the ☢️ silo satellite analysis⁩. This is worrisome. nytimes.com/2021/07/26/us/…
2) Satellite images reveal that China is building a second nuclear missile silo field. The discovery follows the report earlier this month that China appears to be constructing 120 missile silos, says @mattkorda @nukestrat

3) People’s Liberation Army Rocket Force (PLARF) appears to have approximately 250 silos under construction – **more than 10 times the number of ICBM silos** in operation today.

Seriously. This is not normal! Ht @mattkorda who spotted it first. Project of @FAScientists Image
