With the official announcement of Gerald Gillion at Chicago State, all Division I programs currently have a head men's basketball coach. Some impressive diversity stats for the 2021 offseason:
1/
The net increase of black head men's basketball coaches is +11 across all of Division I and +6 among high-major programs. Both of those are the highest increases we've seen since at least 2000.
2/
22 different D1 schools had to replace a black head coach (regardless of reason) and 13 of those schools hired another black head coach.
3/
We also saw 20 white head coaches replaced by black head coaches (again, regardless of the reason for the job opening). That's the highest since 2000, as the previous high was 13 in (2016 and 2012) and the average has been 9.
4/
Specifically in the high-major conferences, where we saw the +6 increase in black head coaches, we had seven different schools replace a white head coach with a black head coach (compared to just one the other way around).
5/
Last stat for now:
There are 28 first-time Division I head coaches going into the 2021-22 season and of those, 19 are black.
The list ranges from 30-year old Drew Valentine (Loyola IL) to 63-year old Mike Woodson (Indiana).
