How to generate idea's to build a successful product? A complete teardown by @arvidkahl 🀩

Thanks, @thisiskp_ for this session at ODNC2 πŸ™Œ

// A thread 🧡
➜ Building products these days is quite easy with different tools that are available to make your work easier

➜ It is difficult to figure out What to build? What problem do people have?

Here are some approaches which you can use to generate idea's
🌟 Idea First Approach

Instead of building something directly and regretting it that nobody is using it validate your idea.

πŸ‘‰πŸ» Many Assumptions = Little validation

It puts your idea in the center and tries to fit that into the world around it.
"Generating ideas yourself" is the wrong approach for bootstrapping a business

➜ It disconnects the idea from its feasibility.

➜ It leaves a lot of assumptions unvalidated.

➜ It can be very expensive.
🌟 The Audience-First Approach

Look in the audience what problem they have?, How can you solve those problems?

πŸ‘‰πŸ» More Validation = Less Assumptions

It puts real people and their problems at its center.
The 4 Stages of an Audience-First Business

1. Audience
➜ Find the right people to serve and empower

➜ This is an important choice as you will work with these people for many years. It could be your customers, users, target audience.
Rank your audience by πŸ“ˆ
➜ Affinity (for the people)
➜ Opportunity (problems)
➜ Appreciation (budget)
➜ Size (of the market)

2. Critical Problem
➜ Figure out what they need help with most
3. Solution
➜ Find a way to solve their problem that fits into their workflow

4. Product
➜ Envision a product that exists within a medium they already use

"Idea Generation" is the result of getting the first two steps right.
➜ Ideas come from observing a community.

➜ Validation happens within that community.

➜ All ideas before that are at risk of being irrelevant. You just don't have enough context yet.
🌟 Embed Yourself In Communities

➜ Join their communities

➜ Observe and listen

➜ Learn their language

➜ Understand their objectives and goals
🌟 How to Find Communities?

➜ Ask people where they go to learn more about their field.

➜ Where do people go to find help?

➜ What periodicals do people consume? (Magazines, Blogs, YouTube channels)

➜ Where do existing businesses advertise?
πŸ€“ Real people talk about real problems

➜ Complaints
There is frustration because they have a problem but don't understand it

➜ Cry for help
They know they have a problem, but don't know how to solve it.
➜ Ask for Recommendations
They are aware that there are solutions, but don't know which to use.

➜ Ask for Alternatives
They tried a solution, but it doesn't work too well for them.
🌟 Two Pillars of Audience Building

➜ Build a Personal Brand

The WHO: the founder, the maker, the problem-solver

The WHY: the origin story, the ambition, the passion

This brand is at least partially founder-community-facing.
This brand is forever even if your project fails, you'll be surrounded by helpful people 😎

➜ Build a Professional Brand

The WHAT: the problem, the solution, the business

The HOW: the product, the journey

This brand is customer-facing.
Best when overlapping, but that isn't always possible in the same community.

➜ Build both, no matter what. You'll *need* the professional brand, and the personal

➜ The brand will be a valuable long-term investment.πŸ’΅
🌟 The Three Components of Audience Building

1/ Engagement

➜ Interact with people where they're already having conversations

➜ Audience Audition: Interact with high(er)-profile accounts and attract like-minded people
2/ Empowerment

➜ Sharing is easy, cheap, and effective
➜ Increase other people's reach and opportunity surface

3/ Valuable Content

➜ Content isn't just blog posts & threads.
➜ Questions, opinions, thoughts & praise are content too
