Thread. Paranormal+folklore true family story: My maternal grandpa used to tell us of an experience he had during the Nazi occupation, which chilled him to the bone. 
One night, as he was riding back to town from the family plot, using a horse and buggy (so as to not attract too much attention), the horse started whinnying and getting extremely agitated.
This was in the countryside outside the town of Tripoli, which at the time was quite isolated. In the darkness ahead, he saw what he described as two pairs of eyes on the two sides of the country road, that shone red like lit coals.
The horse stopped in its tracks and went wild, as he told us that the eyes started hopping in a frenzy to and fro, from one side of the road to the other.
He said that as they came closer, he saw the figures as two implike creatures, small and mischievous, with apparently sharp green teeth that glowed in the dark!
The sound of otherworldly cackles and devilish laughter accompanied them, which of course scared the hell of out my grandpa.
He then told us he started praying the Lord’s Prayer with fervour, and after reciting the prayer numerous times, he heard two loud pops and they disappeared, allowing him to finally pass through and be rid of them.
In the folklore of the area, there were many accounts of creatures called the smerdakia (σμερδάκια) that harassed shepherds and attacked their flock. Whatever it was, it absolutely terrified my grandpa, and I can still remember his stone-cold expression when relaying the story!
