One time, when I was the design lead for the IRS.gov redesign, I had to present the new design and UX experience to the Intuit lead lobbyist. He threw a fit and left the room screaming that it was “Elizabeth Warren’s dream” & demanded we make it harder to navigate
Moral of the story is that the IRS will not have the ability to make filing taxes free and easy without congressional support and funding, and starts with getting lobbyist from Intuit OUT of the room.
The IRS has free filing software but it is actual hot garbage and purposefully made that way because it’s sponsor is…Intuit. They know that taxes are hard, garbage software will only make it more confusing and frustrating, and people will give up and pay for their software.
And every year the IRS site is inundated in early January with tens of millions of users looking to file early because they financially depend on their refund, only to be forced into pricey software bc they don’t trust the shitty free version. So they sacrifice and Intuit wins.
And as a side note, that’s not the first or thirteenth time in DC I have had to watch a grown man dissolve into rage shakes in a bespoke suit over Elizabeth Warren.
