I think The Bureau made a mistake by making XCOM faithful to the era with misogyny, xenophobia, nationalist paranoia. XCOM should be a place reflecting current sensibilities where every player can see themselves represented, while the outside world can represent the bigotry.
Yeah, okay, I get the message, the USA in the 60s was bad. But that doesn't mean all the agents have to look the same. There's a female action hero in the tutorial mission who is grounded the moment we arrive at the base for no reason.
Depicted bigotry in a fictional narrative doesn't have to restrict real life representation in the medium. Especially if it's an unreal, ahistorical, speculative setting.
Guess what in reality the elite commandos won't be 50% female in reality, but XCOM: EU still did that split because they wanted diverse representation. And it works. The XCOM organization can be a magical place where everyone gets a chance.
People mostly talk about the tactical and strategic parts of XCOM, but the XCOM organization being this special safe space is also an important part of the franchise. In Apocalypse you were incentivized to hire persecuted androids and mutants.
