A monster of a data project finally here💥💥 Votes in the June democratic mayoral primary fell along lines of race and wealth. Majority Black, Hispanic and low-income communities gave Adams the edge. Our demographic analysis up @BBGVisualData@BBGEquality. bloomberg.com/graphics/2021-…
In the first citywide ranked choice election, @ericadamsfornyc won by building a coalition of outer-borough voters. His success came from the minority working-class vote. These communities of color and low-income voters are based around areas of the Bronx and South Brooklyn.
@KGforNYC overtook @mayawiley to head into the final round of RCV after seizing votes from co-campaigner @AndrewYang who was previously eliminated in Round 6.
Garcia dominated in majority White and high-income Manhattan. The tail ends of this next chart depict the income disparity between Garcia’s assembly districts and the rest of the candidates.
The average median income in assembly districts that Adams won was roughly $55,000, compared to $111,000 in the districts won by Garcia.
After eight rounds of RCV and absentee ballot counts, @AP called the race and Adams won over Garcia by less than a single percentage point.
Manhattan has the highest population, housing, and voter density in NYC. Garcia won most of it, representing on average 66% White residents. Yet, this election — filled with plenty of candidates and chaos — was carried mostly by non-Manhattan, Black and Hispanic voters.
Black residents made up 34% of the assembly districts that Adams won, whereas they made up less than 5% of districts won by Garcia. In fact, Garcia won *zero* communities of color.
Demographic data is usually tricky to navigate. Although our analysis is imperfect as @BOENYC voter data isn’t broken down by demographics, we can at least use it to try and contextualize elections and voter blocs. Ask questions of our findings. Recognize the impact.
You’ll see a solo byline(!!) on this, but this piece was impossible without @anmccartney and @sbanjo. @BBGVisualData team, you’re lit. Thank you for welcoming this news/data intern into graphics adjacency with open arms 💫
