After the initial underpainting I start to think about values and shadows

Looking at low lights and putting in the dark values

Making sure I was happy with the earth colours before painting in the fence

Basic block out of the fence shape

Thinking about shadows and texture on the fence

Working on the fence detail and adding in the foliage to frame the painting
