Around 1 in 3 women experience birth trauma, and many more come to the other side of having a baby feeling shocked, sad, broken or upset. They often feel that their female bodies let them down, but this is victim blaming. It's the system that lets them down.
Birth rooms were built by men with men's needs in mind. Bright lights and on your back on a bed help the care giver to see (but inhibit the birth hormones and make birth more difficult). Surrounded by strangers in sterile environments is not how mammals birth.
But if a woman's body doesn't 'work' in this situation, she often feels at fault. If she complains or talks about her trauma, she is told, 'a healthy baby is all that matters'. No. Women matter. This is why birth is a feminist issue, and just the beginning of my book.
Give Birth like a Feminist is helpful if you are pregnant, but really, I wrote it for feminists / anyone who cares about women and their lives. Because, birth really is an overlooked feminist issue, an area where it's still accepted that it's ok for women to get a raw deal.
There are some fab feminists here on twitter, and I'm genuinely excited to think of some of you reading this. I really look forward to your responses. I think women deserve better in birth and my hope for this book was always that it opens up a new area of feminist activism. ♥️
