Kentaro Kobayashi, the director of the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony, has been fired one day before the event itself. Kobayashi was reportedly fired because of a Holocaust joke he performed during a comedy show in 1998.
'We found out that Mr. Kobayashi, in his own performance, has used a phrase ridiculing a historical tragedy,' organizing committee president Seiko Hashimoto said in a statement.
'We deeply apologize for causing such a development the day before the opening ceremony and for causing troubles and concerns to many involved parties as well as the people in Tokyo and the rest of the country,' the statement continued.
Kobayashi has apologized for the incident. The news of Kobayashi's termination is the latest piece of bad news to plague the upcoming Olympics.
Previously, Keigo Oyamada, a music composer for the opening ceremony, resigned after interviews from the 1990s surfaced of him boasting about bullying disabled people. Kobayashi is said to have bullied disabled people, too, reports NPR.
'As far as the Opening Ceremony is concerned, this is a very critical matter so therefore it's important that we put up a respectable Opening Ceremony. We will exert our maximum efforts towards that,' Hashimoto said, via NPR.

After more than 100 years, the MLB's Cleveland Indians will now be called the Cleveland Guardians. Image
The team, which has been consistently under fire for years for its use of the name and caricature of a Native American known as 'Chief Wahoo,' has faced an even greater reckoning in recent years, with many calling for a complete rebranding.
On Friday, a promo video narrated by one-time Hollywood baseball coach (ahem, 'League of Their Own') and apparent Cleveland baseball fan Tom Hanks announced the team's name change to the Guardians with backing music provided by Akron, Ohio, band the Black Keys.

'It's funny to think about coming out because I haven't gone anywhere. I view today as a reintroduction to me as a woman, having made a transition medically. Coming out is always viewed as this grand reveal, but I was never not out,' Tommy Dorfman told TIME. Image
'Today is about clarity: I am a trans woman. My pronouns are she/her. My name is Tommy,' she continued.
Dorfman, best known for her role in Netflix’s ‘13 Reasons Why,’ shared the news on Instagram: ‘I’m especially grateful to every single trans person who walked this path, broke down barriers, and risked their lives to live authentically and radically as themselves before me...'

It’s just one of the newer pieces of legislation aimed at helping the country’s LGBTQ+ population. Back in June, Argentina’s Congress moved to reserve at least 1% of public sector jobs for transgender individuals.
‘We have the need to open our heads to realize there are other ways to love and be loved, and there are other identities apart from the identity of a man or a woman, and they should be respected,’ remarked President Alberto Fernández.

Conservationists say that a plan for a new oil field in Namibia and Botswana is threatening the ecosystems and communities in the Kavango Basin and the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO-protected World Heritage Site.
The Canadian oil and gas company behind the proposed oil field, ReconAfrica, has leased more than 13,000 sq miles of land and begun seismic exploration.
While the Namibian government says that it won't have an impact on the surrounding wildlife, conservationists believe that the exploration and development will disturb elephants and open the area up to more poaching.
