Anecdotes about breakthrough COVID cases have caused concern for vaccinated individuals looking to resume their pre-pandemic lives.
However, data from across the Bay Area suggests those who are fully vaccinated are at very low risk of severe disease. sfgate.com/coronavirus/ar…
COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations are on the rise in CA, mainly driven by the highly contagious delta variant and unvaccinated individuals.
While LA County has experienced the most extreme increase in cases & hospitalizations, the SF Bay Area is also seeing an uptick.
As cases rise in a world with vaccinations, many people are wondering exactly how many new infections are occurring in unvaccinated vs. vaccinated individuals.
We asked all nine Bay Area counties to share this information, and while we received data in a variety of different forms, it showed one clear trend:

After a string of COVID-19 infections were reportedly traced back to travelers returning from Las Vegas, one county in Hawaii is sounding the alarm on travel to the Sin City. sfgate.com/hawaii/article…
Las Vegas is so popular in Hawaii that it's often colloquially referred to as its ninth island.
But the state's Department of Health branch in Kauai warns that Las Vegas "poses significant risks" due to the lax restrictions in the city, according to multiple media reports.
"Visitors stay indoors for prolonged periods, mingling with others from all over the country," reads the news release.
"Masks are not required. The result is a set-up for the spread of COVID-19."
Acquiring millions of views in the month leading up to the first episode, @netflix's "Sexy Beasts" trailer was described by some commenters as nightmare fuel, and contestants were compared to sleep paralysis demons. sfgate.com/sf-culture/art…
In the trailer, Kariselle — who is unrecognizable as a panda — tells her date she wants to get married and have kids before 26.
James — a man masquerading as a beaver — stares into the camera as he shares what he looks for in a match: “Ass first, personality second.”
“Sexy Beasts” follows the formula of a typical reality dating series: An eligible man or woman is presented with three love interests who compete for their affection.
This time, however, everyone wears Hollywood-worthy special effects makeup to conceal their looks.
At Vanessa’s Bistro in Berkeley, owner Vi Nguyen recently encountered a customer who stood in her kitchen doorway to yell at her after a server made a simple mistake.
"Her husband stood at the doorway and was like, ‘She's hungry! She needs her food right now!’”
This wasn’t an isolated incident for Nguyen. Since California’s June 15 reopening of the economy, customers have gotten … a little difficult. Well, a lot difficult.
Nguyen isn’t the only restaurant owner to notice a change in customers’ behavior post-reopening.
“I’ve been seeing a huge rise in people just forgetting to be human,” said Mina Makram, founder of Palo Alto bakery Misfits Bakehouse.
On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of State shut down its online appointment system for passport applicants citing scammers who had been grabbing appointments to sell them to desperate would-be travelers for hundreds, sometimes thousands, of dollars. sfgate.com/travel/article…
The scammers, who were targeting those with an urgent and life-or-death need to travel internationally, used bots to scoop up bookings at the State Department's passport agencies, making it nearly impossible for others to get appointments.
They would then join online forums, such as the “US Passports and Visas” Facebook group, and offer these appointments — a free government service — for a fee.
On Wednesday evening, the State Department shut down the passport agency’s online booking system entirely.
"Arriving with all of the fanfare that a corporate-designed cash grab can reasonably expect to muster, the Giants’ new uniforms somehow manage to be uninteresting, uninspiring and underwhelming all at once," writes Dave Tobener (@gggiants.) sfgate.com/giants/article…
"As far as I know, no team has attempted to represent fog on a jersey before, and with good reason.
What’s supposed to be curling wisps of fog rising up onto the jersey instead looks like an unfortunate accident with bleach."
"What’s most unfortunate is that for a jersey program meant to connect the fans with the city and the team’s history, Nike couldn’t have asked for a better canvas than San Francisco and the Giants."
Two airplane pilots were rescued early Friday morning in the waters off Hawaii after a Boeing 737 cargo plane "went down," according to the U.S. Coast Guard. sfgate.com/bayarea/articl…
The incident occurred at 1:40 a.m. about two miles off Kalaeloa Airport and a boat, helicopter and C-130 plane all responded, said Petty Officer 3rd Class Matthew West.
Both individuals were rescued.
"I'm not sure of their medical condition but they were taken to Queen's Medical Center," West said.
The plane made an emergency landing after the pilots reported engine trouble.
