Everything you need (to learn) to make a basic fighting game.
Simplified version. Check the thread⬇️
Concept & Design
- traditional 2D? 3D? Brawler? Arena?
- base gameplay concept
- key mechanics
Before you even make any characters you have to have this down on paper. Whats your game even gonna be like? Whats gonna make your game special, gameplay wise?
Art & Design
- art style/direction
- character designs
- stage designs
- user Interface design
- visual effects
Once you know what type of game youre making and how its gonna play you can start designing things. This is where you figure out what the game should look like overal
Animations
- design character move set/playstyle
- all character animations
- visual effects animations
When making a new character dont go all-out, and just animate roughly. You dont know if every move works well together yet. Youll be redoing a lot of animations while testing
Programming
- keyboard/gamepad inputs
- player physics & movement
- player collision
- player animations
- player health
- hitbox/hurtbox collisions
- attack damage & hitstun
- attack knockback
- win/lose match
- other mechanics you have
This is where youll be for the most part
Sound design
- menu sounds
- attack sounds
- movement sounds (footsteps etc)
- sounds for other mechanics you have
Sound is super important. It allowes for audio cues and can make your game feel more alive. If you cant do/learn this i advise you to find someone. Dont skip this.
Music Composition
- game theme song
- menu soundtracks
- stage soundtracks
Also super important to know what kind of vibe you want to go for and what fits your art style the most. Yet again, dont sleep on this.
These are the skills you need to know the basics of if you want to make a fighting game:
- Concept/Game Design
- Art
- Animations
- Programing
- Sound Design
- Music Composition
Dont hesitate to ask someone to fill in for the parts you cant do yourself or have trouble learning.
