Dear self-professed progressives objecting to Ben & Jerry’s exiting settlements: pause in your self-congratulating to read MLK’s msg to moderates in his Letter from a Birmingham Jail (a message that - yes - applies today to you).

““I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom…”
2/
“…is not the White Citizens Councillor or the Ku Klux Klanner but the white moderate who is more devoted to order than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice;…”
3/
“who constantly says, ‘I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action’; who paternalistically feels that he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time;…”
4/
“…and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a ‘more convenient season.’ Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.”

If you don’t follow pro-Greater Israel twitter, you’re missing right now a campaign of character assassination against Ben & Jerry’s Board of Directors Chair — one that looks a lot like previous campaign against the ICC prosector (both of whom happen to be non-white women).
What this means - and likely it won’t be just in NY - is the normalization of a new baseline definition of Israel to mean “Israel + the occupied territories”.
People are suddenly paying attention to laws in states quashing free speech critical of Israel.
What most people don’t know is that these laws are being used as a template for legislation quashing free speech on other topics.
A quick thread.

I warned back in 2018 - U.S. Politicians Are Backing a Free Speech Exception for Israel — & Creating a Template for Broader Assault on the First Amendment.
I warned: "this template could be re-purposed to bar contracts with individuals or groups affiliated with or supportive of any political cause or organization...that the majority in a legislature or the occupant of a governor’s office deemed undesirable.”

In conjunction with his intro of an outrageous res bashing @Ilhan@AOC & @RepPressley, Waltz (R-FL) has helpfully compiled a doc containing what he apparently sees as the evidence of their anti-Israel, antisemitic ways. Let’s review!
