📢🚨Happy to announce that our book is finally here! We examine what commonalities exist across successful movements organizing in Black/Brown communities. How did they organize people to build the power they need for the change they want? (1/6) #prisms
Our argument starts w/the premise that such movements always face uncertainty. Effective mmts differentiate themselves not by how good their plan is at the outset but by how prepared they are to respond when their power is challenged. Power does not give up power easily. (2/6)
The question is: given that they don't know what challenges will come, how can they prepare at T1 for what will come at T2? Answer is about the extent to which they cultivate an interconnected base of ppl who are flexible & committed, equipped to move w/the org. (3/6) #prisms
We track the state-based power building work of orgs like @LUCHA_AZ@NewVAMajority@AMOS_Project@ISAIAHMN and use data to show how they were able to actually shift dynamic political power...(yes, power can be measured!)(4/6) #prisms
And how they did so by acting like prisms, transforming the actions of their people into vectors of power--to build a pluralistic, multiracial world. The book dives into what it takes for movements to be able to act like a prism & to do it at scale. (5/6) #prisms
So grateful for all the organizer & leaders who opened themselves & their orgs up to us so that we could learn & hopefully, write something that will help others learn too. (6/6) #prisms
(& check out how colorful our book will look on your bookshelf!)
So much to love that it’s hard to know where to start.
It might begin w/the holistic analysis of interrelationships b/t organizing at the center, infrastructure thru party orgs and other vehicles, and strategic leadership.
Also love recognition of need to build orgs b/c otherwise unsustainable effort of all exit & no voice: “Sustained engagement w/all..parts of a Dem coalition means that while those you disappoint may be angry..they won’t abandon the mission.”
