Moderation - practising it so that the best things do not become harmful
"If we do not know how to draw the line, even the best things can become harmful. Unfortunately, moderation is not the most common of virtues among human beings.
For example, instead of taking only as much joy or pleasure as they need to be stimulated, people gorge themselves until they fall sick. They are like the man whose friend had invited him to dinner: ‘Let me see’, he said, ‘Monday I’m having dinner with so-and-so, so
Tuesday I’ll be in bed. Wednesday, I’m dining with someone else, so Thursday I’ll also be in bed. Well, I can make it Friday, if you like!’ At least he knew himself!
Whether it is food, drink or pleasure, human beings always tend to go over the limit.
Why can’t they be satisfied with just a little? Even poison can be beneficial if it is taken in homoeopathic doses. But except for medicines, human beings do not understand what homoeopathy is – they do not realize that there are homoeopathic doses and allopathic doses
in the psychic life too, and that homoeopathic doses are preferable, whereas allopathic doses that are too strong are sometimes harmful."

True temple, the - a hallowed human body
"As long as human beings are not sufficiently evolved to understand the basic truths of the spiritual life, they will need the tangible, material aspects of religion.
But the day they finally manage to become more fully developed and awaken within themselves certain subtle centres – known in Hindu philosophy as chakras – they will gain a higher level of understanding of things and will begin to abandon the outer forms,
for these forms will no longer seem as vital, intense and powerful as those they are experiencing inwardly. Then they will no longer even need temples and churches.
There are many temples in the world, all of which have their reason for being.

Inner discomfort - find the cause of it and dispel it with light
"When you feel an inner discomfort, do not let it linger without doing something about it. Stop and take stock of the state you are in – what exactly are you feeling, what has caused it?
Try to remember what you have seen and heard, or what you yourself have done, said or thought.
Because something has caused it, and it is good to figure out what, in order to learn a lesson for the future. If you do not find the cause, do not just sit and do nothing.
Concentrate and try to dispel this discomfort by connecting with the world of light, which is our only salvation. Immerse yourself in the light, imagine that you are swimming in this purifying and invigorating fluid, and soon you will feel free,

A female humpback whale had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat.
She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth.
This is her story of giving gratitude.
A fisherman spotted her just east of the Faralon Islands (outside the Golden Gate) and radioed for help.
Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so badly off, the only way to save her was to dive in and untangle her…. a very dangerous proposition.
One slap of the tail could kill a rescuer.

The piece below from the 13th century poet Rumi carries within it an essence that is central to many spiritual traditions around the world. The teaching itself may seem simple, but the most powerful ones always do.

The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,

some momentary awareness comes

as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!

Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,

who violently sweep your house

empty of its furniture...
still, treat each guest honorably.

He may be clearing you out

for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice.

Meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.

Be grateful for whatever comes.

Because each has been sent

as a guide from beyond.

-- Rumi

Destiny - a person’s destiny is determined by their attitude towards heaven

"The whole of a person’s destiny is determined by their attitude towards heaven. But, far from glorifying God and humbling themselves before his greatness, human beings show less and less respect,
thereby obstructing his designs and disrupting the order of creation. Humans’ worst enemy is pride, this insolent, arrogant attitude that will lead to their ruin.
If they wish to save themselves, they must learn to regard creation as sacred, to vibrate like an Aeolian harp in response to every breath, every current from heaven, to communicate with the universe, with the Universal Soul, with God himself.

Spiritual responsibilities - instead of crushing you, they lift you up
"A spiritual Master, an Initiate, bears enormous responsibilities but he is not crushed by them, for spiritual responsibilities are not heavy or burdensome.
If you want to spread light in the world, it may seem as though you are burdening yourself, but in reality, things become lighter for you. Why? Because the nature of the charge is different. Far from weighing you down, responsibilities of a divine, spiritual nature lift you up.
It all depends on the nature of the charges you accept.
Take for example a block of stone; it is heavy because it is subject to the gravitational force of the earth, but if you move it far enough from the earth to escape this attraction, it becomes weightless –
