My take on teamwork in healthcare…for what it’s worth. 😄#SurgEd

Ada from Lincoln, 4 score years and seven,
Had lived a good life, she was destined for heaven,
Developed a pain, down in her left groin,
Decided to fight, that it wasn’t her time;

Called up her practice to book an appointment,
They listened intently, suggested some ointment,
Explained ‘if things get worse, call 999’,
They couldn’t see her, just didn’t have time;

Later that evening, as she entered ED,
A stressed looking nurse, complained about the GP,
‘They just send you all in, don’t do nowt at all,
Waste of time picking, the phone up to call’;

Across town at the practice, that GP put down the phone,
37 calls, 3 visits, and clinic at a nursing home,
He’d gone to see a palliative patient, he’d known for 10 years,
The job was taking everything, blood sweat and tears!

ED had seen Ada, assessed and referred,
Urology for colic, thought her ureter was furred,
Urology shouted, ‘you guys are just crap,
It’s a rupture!’ and fast bleeped vascular, in a flap;

The ‘’crap’’ ED doctor, was next door in resus,
Running trauma bay 1, all calm and no fuss,
ABC, good decisions, and acted real fast,
Saved the life of a plumber, who’d been caught in a blast;

Vascular came, Consultant and Reg,
Cursed the urologist, their tone had an edge,
‘Did she go to Med school? The diagnosis is wrong!
Probably a hernia, get General along’;

Meanwhile the urologist had been called to see Seth,
Blocked septic kidney, he was looking like death,
Nephrostomy, antibiotics and drip,
Brought him back from the brink, by action so quick;

Gen Surg ‘Bob’ swaggered in, to give his own take,
‘Those vascular muppets, no hernia for Pete’s sake,
It’s probably her hip, at her age they can fail,
Get Ortho down here, with their hammer and nails’;

Later, Bob fixing a hernia in theatre 5,
Made a hole in the femoral vein, ‘man alive’,
The ‘’vascular muppet’’, rushed in to give aid,
Fixed the vein, stopped the bleeding, more respect then was paid;

The Orthopods came, had a look at X rays,
No fracture here, batted the referral away,
‘Those gen surg losers, can’t diagnose a break!
MRCS? check the certificate’s not fake!’;

T&O trauma patient, currently on table,
Having their pelvis fixed, became somewhat unstable,
Missed small bowel injury, gen surg arrived,
Washed out and fixed, to ensure they survived;

Ada meanwhile, rejected by all,
Was brought tea by a porter who had seen her nearly fall,
Noticed the heal on her shoe was askew,
Fixed it and by doing that, fixed her groin pain too!

We are all small parts, of a big team,
Work with each other, no need to be mean!😄
