Today, we’re hosting a People’s Budget workshops with the amazing crew of teachers at @CTULocal1
➡️➡️ Follow along this thread to follow along.
What do our communities need to be safe and thriving?
- affordable housing
- access to healthy food
- gun violence solutions that aren’t police/carceral
- mental health resources
- debt forgiveness
- unleaded water
- youth programs
- libraries
We’re in two breakout groups now and folks have to decide where to spent their first $1 to make a community budget.
Housing was a pop. choice bc “people need a place to live, shower, be themselves, relax” etc.
With $7, folks had to choose where to spend the remaining of their budget.
Health is important to the group esp noting the pandemic and how it has impacts many short and long term.
Final budget for group 1 has about a fifth in health, 15% in education, a fifth in housing, 15% in infrastructure, 21% in community resources, and 3 to carceral systems.
Final budgets per $100 for our two groups!
Compare the previous People’s Budgets to what the city of Chicago is spending our money is.
City spends about $31.68 per $100 — $6 more than the next category of infrastructure.

Here at 24th and Sawyer in Little Village to #StopShotSpotter and cancel their contract in Chicago
Alex with ACRE: Most folks should be here - including Adam Toledo. Investing in Shotspotter is choosing to take away opportunities. We are here to let the city know that’s not happening anymore. It’s not happening because we keep us safe.
Jose w @UneteLaVillita: We’re here to talk about shotspotter, these audio devices that are surveilling our communities. We had a meeting w/ Mike Rodriguez. He said he would be an ally but he wouldn’t commit to canceling the contract because he didn’t want to lose.
First speaker is Xanat w/ @OCAD_CHI by highlighting the case of Wilmer Catalan Ramirez whose name was listed as a member of two opposing gangs. His home was unlawfully raided and information shared with ICE.
Second speaker is Miguel w/ OCAD: Gang database does not work, needs to destroyed. Everyday we are reminded the violence in this city - more cops only escalate violence. We need to stop listening and centering police and instead center community impacted
