there's a lot of amazing Boulanger scholarship out there that I read for this piece, starting with the great Boulanger and Her World volume edited for Bard by @jeanice_brooks press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book…
I highly recommend Brooks's book "The Musical Work of Nadia Boulanger" for fascinating insights into her musical ideology and how it shaped her performance career
I highly recommend @KimFrancisPhD's book on Boulanger and Stravinsky -- it's about a fascinating musical friendship but also gives really rich insights into Boulanger as a person
I ultimately couldn't find a place for it in the piece, but I also appreciated @K_Leonard_PhD's important critique of Boulanger, especially about her anti-Semitism
And I also appreciated @KimFrancisPhD's nuanced take, in her book, on Nadia Boulanger's anti-Semitism
Finally, I'm super grateful to @KimFrancisPhD for sharing her forthcoming article in Women & Music on the Boulanger sisters' correspondence (both the lede and kicker were inspired by it!)
