The year 2019 was Dasvidanya the Eurocopter AS3332 helicopter, colloquially called Super Puma. For years the Super Puma has been the primary helicopter for Nigerian Special Forces troops
Im 2019 the Russian built Mi-17E multi mission helicopter was chosen to replace the Super Puma as the adopted aircraft for NAF Special Forces Units.
The first batch of the new MI-17E was delivered by a Russian Ilyushin Il-76 transport plane on 2 December 2020
In February the MI-17EI wasofficially inducted by the President for Special Forces operations.
The MI--17IE has two side mounted 12.7mm forward firing machine guns.

It is outfitted with state of the art flight control and navigation equipment. A gyro stabilized optical electronic system, a search light with an infrared emitter and is adapted for night operations.
To increase its combat survivability, the Mi-17E is outfitted with a digital auto pilot flight system and a defensive aid suit that automatically detects missile launches against the helicopter and jam the missile warhead and releases heat flares.
The main role of the helicopter is to carry cargo, insert troops and support them with its firepower. It can also perform evacuation and combat search and rescue. It can soften up enemy defences before landing. It can engage enemy infantry, amoured vehicles and even Tanks.
It can carry various types of guided missiles, unguided rockets, cannons, cluster bombs, Ataka anti-tank missiles, Igla air to air missiles.

According to information gleamed from captured Boko Haram insurgents, the two aircafts that instilled the fear of God in them were the Triangle and Mi-35M. The Triangles have been out for a while (this hiatus will be short-lived) while the Mi-35M has picked up the mantle. ImageImageImage
Important to note here that we are not talking of the Mi-24 Hind, which is deadly in its own right. We talking about the MI-35M, which is a comprehensive upgrade of the Mi-24, and brings to the battlefield a whole range of capabilities Boko Haram/ISWAP is not prepared for. ImageImageImageImage
Its primarily designed for attack missions yet can insert 8 soldiers into the battlefield for follow up/mop up operations. Compared to the Mi-24, the "35M" delivers superior flight performance characteristics and manoeuvrability when compared to the Mi-24. Its not even close.

Nigeria and South Africa field the largest and most sophisticated combat helicopter fleet in Sub Saharan Africa. No other country comes close to matching the rotary wings fleet of both nations. ImageImageImageImage
However South Africa is the only nation in Africa capable of independently developing and producing advanced fourth generation helicopters. ImageImageImage
The South Africans are 20 years ahead of China in the development of advanced combat helicopters. The Rooivalk first flew in 1990, back when China was still a peasant economy. ImageImageImageImage

While it may be true that the death of Abubakar Shekau allowed the larger and better organized ISWAP terrorist group, to solicit the loyalty of Shekau’s remaining terrorists and forge a unified effort to create a caliphate. Its a little too late for ISWAP. The military ImageImageImageImage
..is getting new deliveries, its better armed, better trained, and let's be honest, its the most combat experienced in Africa. The Nigerian military has had a decade of warfare under its belt. From maritime piracy to insurgency. It knows what works and what doesn't.
And..its not just the army and airforce, though they get the spotlight. Even the Nigerian Navy has had a decade to master littoral operations, tactics, rescue operations and freedom of navigation operations. It is by far the best trained and combat experienced in SSA ImageImageImageImage

Why is Nigeria so hell bent on aquiring the American AH-1 Cobra, it is willing to risk another diplomatic embarrassment.

In 2013 the Israeli air force phased out its fleet of AH-1 attack helicopters. Nigeria showed interest in buying surplus helicopters that was phased out ImageImageImage
