The Lumen team is engaging in a new research project to study the burgeoning phenomenon of takedown notices, usually DMCA notices, being sent by a *copier* to seek the takedown of the original content.

This is sometimes known as the “backdated article” or “fake website” technique, but it also goes by other names. You may have read about it in this recent excellent Wall Street Journal piece.

Lumen did some pilot research and wrote about this a few years ago, and we’re now looking into it again, in the hopes of both learning more about the phenomenon generally

We are also hoping to develop some ways in which to better recognize this type of notice earlier on, possibly even somewhat automatically, and without a lot of labor-intensive detective work on when domains were registered, when pages were created, and so on.

With all that in mind, Lumen collecting examples of these notices so that we can improve our dataset.

If you have an example of such a notice, please send it to us!

Don't tweet at us, please send it to us at [e-mail]
in an email with the following subject line:

"EXAMPLE: Fake takedown notice – [You can include a short description here]"

In your email, please include not only a copy of or link to the notice itself (which might already be in Lumen!) but also any and all evidence you have collected proving that the takedown you’re sharing is this sort of takedown notice.

Lumen will not be able to give you any more information about the notice you received than you already have.
