"Everyone wants to win, but sometimes there are more important things than being the winner." #IvanFernandezAndAbelMutai
On Friendship Day, felt like sharing this incident again.....
An incident happened at a cross country race in 2012, but it is a story well worth repeating.
2
The race was taking place in Navarra, Spain. Ivan Fernandez Anaya was a long distance runner from Spain. He competed in cross country races & marathons.
Abel Mutai was a Kenyan athlete who had been in the lead. Ivan was behind him.
3
Kenyan runner Abel Mutai was only a 10 mtrs frm d finish line, but got confused with d signs & stopped, thinking he had finished d race.
Ivan Fernandez, was right behind him &,realizing what was going on,started shouting to d Abel to keep running but as he didn't know Spanish,
4
Abel couldn't understand.
Ivan, saw what was happening & could have run past his opponent to win d race but he chose to guide Abel towards d finish line. Ivan came in second.
Ivan, pushed Abel to victory.
He showed what a true gentleman he was.
5
He exemplified good sportsmanship & human kindness.
When questioned after d race about y he had guided Abel towards d finish line, Ivan said:
“He was the rightful winner. He created a gap that I couldn’t hv closed if he hadn’t made a mistake. As soon as I saw he was stopping,
6
I knew I wasn’t going to pass him.”
He added:“My dream is that someday we can have a kind of community life.” In other words, a place where people would help each other & show kindness.
D reporter insisted "But why did you let the Kenyan win?" Ivan replied, "I didn't let him
7
win, he was going to win. D race was his."
When pressed further by d reporter & asked , "But you could have won!" ...Ivan looked at him & replied: "But what would be d merit of my victory? What would be d honor of this medal? What would my Mother think of it?"

Running Magazine lists d race & d actions of Fernandez as one of d top sportsmanlike moments in running history.
We can all learn from this story of Ivan & Abel. D world would be a better place if we could all practice such good sportsmanship in our daily lives.
It doesn’t have to be in an athletic event. Hatred could be curbed if common courtesy & human kindness would be practiced by people in their daily lives.
The values are transmitted from generation to generation.
Teach values to children's & inspire them.
Teach them not to take advantage of people's weaknesses instead help in strengthening them.
