Don't try to 'tame' your Bible. Don't try to make every loose end and jagged edge fit the system you think has to contain it. Whatever excellent summary systems we compose - and we need these badly - they cannot contain all Scriptures says in neat, orderly rows.
If you're a teacher, don't fool people into thinking the tidy system answers all the questions; it won't because it can't. Despite our best efforts, some parts of the Bible you wish would fit your system better just won't be crammed in there - such stubborn unrelenting words!
Let the Bible shock you and anger you and baffle you and humble you and convict you and rattle you and undo you. There, in those places of unexpected & uncomfortable encounter with the voice of the Almighty, you will be transformed by the non-conforming words of the Scriptures...
... alive and made effectual by the Holy Spirit, who is definitely out to get you and change you, doing a deep work in you so he can do a great work through you.

The @MikeCosper pod on Mars Hill @CTmagazine is staggering & painfully helpful. He's right to point out that a wider phenomenon is in play, that it's more than a single movement or church issue. In 2014 I was at a Liberate Conference at Coral Ridge when @TullianT was asked...
during a Pastor's Q&A Session, 'How do you avoid becoming a Celebrity Pastor?" He replied, 'You don't. You WANT that! You do everything you can to be a celebrity and build your brand...' @PaulTripp @ScottyWardSmith & Steve Brown on the platform with him looked stunned. I was...
...sitting next to my ATX pal John Ratliffe and we were both stunned too. We shouldn't have been. Like Mark Driscoll, Tullian wouldn't accept the help of older wiser men and in the end, the cataclysmic outcome was devastating to many. Thank God @RobPacienza is at Coral Ridge...

Churches can be deeply evil places. That's not exactly new news but it bears repeating. As congregations and denominations, they can be brutal instruments of satanic, murderous rage, inflicting pain and suffering on many. All churches are impure but some...
...have become so corrupted that all one can do is flee from them. The Westminster Confession reads, "The purest Churches under heaven are subject both to mixture and error... some have so degenerated, as to become no Churches of Christ, but synagogues of Satan."
While such pervasive darkness can be (and often is) related to false teaching it is equally seen when a church defends the truth by means that are false. In much the same way that idolatry consists of the true worship of false gods and the false worship of the true God, truth...

It can be tough to deal with spiritual warfare passages in Scripture because they’ve been hijacked and twisted by a secularist vision of conflict ironically led by preachers. The triumph of Christ was thru the Cross & humble love, not vicious attacks on political foes.
Some have turned the battle FOR people into a battle WITH people. Idolizing their ideology & narrowing the struggle to one nation’s news cycle, they’ve utterly forgotten the historical, global, & spiritual dimensions of God’s saving mission through the Good News.
It seems to me that at least in some quarters, Christians have forgotten the prescient warning of Nietzsche - “he who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become the monster…if you gaze long into an abyss the abyss gazed into you.”

North American Evangelicalism has never more resembled the late medieval papacy than it does right now. It is captive to political power, soaked in exploitive sensuality, reveling in abuses of authority, protecting its privileges rather than serving the broken, turning worship...
...into a carnival show that makes God’s priestly people a mere audience for on-stage performers rather than holy participants in heavenly mystery. It makes the Bible its servant instead of serving the Scriptures to others; it ignores the ethics of Jesus & cherry picks verses...
... to uphold its cultural waywardness & excuse its abuses, twisting the truth to excuse oppression, violence, deception, misogyny, & abuse, while cursing the voices of prophets who bring light to this darkness. Evangelicals need a Reformation.

The Church's mission is not to confront the world and its powers, especially in a menacing tone dripping with hubris, but rather to invite the world to the banquet of the Kingdom. We are ambassadors and announce the good news of Jesus that answers the sad news of human brokenness
The world may refuse the invitation & even hate the Church, but the Church's response to this would still be love - to seek to make friends of those who call themselves the Church's enemies (we do not call them that). After all, God's grace makes friends & family of his foes.
The Gospel is respectfully announced in words backed by the example of deeds and humility expressed through neighbor love shared from a posture of service. Love must be visible to bear witness. It is the bridge over which truth crosses the rivers of skepticism & cynicism.

The Gospel answers the problem of racism not when it is reduced to a merely personal post-life entry pass to heaven or distorted into a socio-political program, but when its totally believed, receiving Jesus who comprehensively forgives the unimaginable & makes family of foes.
This new humanity is freely justified by faith and called into a new community that sheds the old world identities for a new union with God & one another. It is why salvation isn’t separated from the church, nor from works to show God’s love & justice in this broken world.
Whatever may be the Ephesus we are “in” and call home, we are first “in Christ” and committed to his throne. Repudiating racism and ethnic pride isn’t wokism, it’s Gospel living. We celebrate the uniqueness of peoples and this because of our new unity in Jesus.
