Her speech:
1- “After many requests, I was finally given the Savvas supplemental documents 6 days ago. Those documents are disturbing & disgusting and should not be part of any curriculum. Savvas promotes mental, physical, and sexual abuse, underage use of drugs and alcohol

2- & so much more! At this point, I have only had the opportunity to review a few pages, but here is what I found.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is about a young child who is sexually abused by his alcoholic aunt. The boy has lots of sex, eats weed brownies, and ultimately…

3- comes to the realization that his aunt molested him because she too was sexually molested as a child which is why she committed suicide. Two male football players kiss & have descriptive gay sex multiple times. During one of their sexual encounters, one boy’s father walks…

4- in on them having gay sex and beats his son. There is also pedophilia throughout the book, including how one young child’s first kiss was by her father’s boss. The book also includes bullying of the gay boys. This is not literature.

5- Another Savvas supplement is Looking for Alaska. This book has gained notoriety for being the 4th most banned book in the US due to its profanity and sexually explicit content. It is a book that teaches how to give blow job, has extensive & descriptive promiscuous teen sex,

6- descriptive porn videos watched by teens, masturbation, drugs, profanity, underage excessive drinking, drinking and driving (main character, Alaska, commits suicide by driving while drunk) and strippers. Page 62 describes the main character having sex with a man that is…

7- “hung like a horse and a beautiful, sensual lover”.  Three pages are used to explain how to give a blow job.  In the end, the teens are immune to any decency or  innocence & are depicted laying in bed, naked after sex, drunk and smoking a joint. This is porn & not literature.

8- The book also claims that marijuana is better than smoking cigarettes.

The Liar’s Club, by Mary Karr. This is a book about abusive and alcoholic parents. An 8 year old girl is raped by a teenager and later sexually abused by her babysitter.

9- There is excessive profane language, child porn, child abuse, alcoholism, mental instability, physical & sexual abuse of both adults and children, & so much more that is inappropriate and not “literature.” Spanking is described as…

10- “a kind of family sporting event complete with rounds”.  

And, all of this is only in the first 4 pages of the supplements. You may try to claim that SUSD teachers won’t use these supplements, but they are available to them…

11- and you bought and paid for them. Teachers can and will use them as they are promoted by Savvas. This is not appropriate for our SUSD students. Thus, I request that you reconsider Savvas’ adoption into the SUSD curriculum."
